    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

Somewhat by coincidence, about half-an-hour Google yielded up this review, which is pretty accurate at least based on my experience: https://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/13/13669.phtml The recycling of characters via the "Owe List" is not something I've done, as I've only played one-shots, but...

I reiterated the imagined instance of play of Apocalypse World, where the PC breaks into Dremmer's storeroom and encounters Pattycakes the cook. And then asked - to myself, so apologies for that! - why the players would feel that the fiction/world is independent of them, given that they can...

I've noticed a certain trend in this discussion that, when it comes to identifying features of D&D, combat doesn't count. There is a possible historical reason for this: in the classic game, where the goal is to beat the dungeon by getting all the loot out of it, exploration is the key to...

This is contentious. In the way PCs are built - stats, feats, the components of a character's "race" - is heavily derived from 3E D&D. And the way hit points, saving throws and other features of combat work is, to me at least, heavily reminiscent of Gygax's AD&D. I feel that 4e really pays out...

But not if the successful distraction of Thoth grants a bonus to the subsequent roll to not alert him.

I'm not @Campbell, but you can see my answer to these questions in my reply to him not very far upthread: D&D General - [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.. I don't think it's about "looking to learn" vs "looking to transform yourself" - that makes it sound like a psychology...

I think you might be remembering me posting about Prince Valiant. It's not quite player consent, but there is no death without the GM deciding that it's on the table as a consequence, and the GM is encouraged not to do that unless the fiction really compels it. (Examples of this that are given...

When it comes to the classic inspirational literature, my gold standard for climbing urban walls to sneak into somewhere important is REH's Tower of the Elephant. There are guards, and lions, and other guardian creatures. Given the pace at which REH wrote, he must have been making most of this...

As I posted upthread, I've GMed 1000s of hours of Rolemaster, in the period 1990-2008 (inclusive). It was the game of choice for my university group (which endured well after we'd all graduated, and is still the kernel of my current group), and over that time we ran two long campaigns (1990-97...

Here is what he says about Pendragon, in the blog: Pendragon is a prime example of a [substantial exploration] game, as the purpose of its existence is to be this massive exegesis and love letter to the Matter of Britain. If the players don’t appreciate it yet, they will. Aside from folklore...

It's quite a while since I read the Iron Crown/Rolemaster forums. But back when I used to, it was interesting to see that most of the posters were playing games structurally indistinguishable from mainstream AD&D 2nd ed play - the difference that RM made was simply that they liked its colour...

A bit more from Tuovinen that seems relevant to this thread: the term “princess play” is not intended to be disparaging. I do not think that playing princess is a shameful activity. If you do, you might need help, because you’re criticizing a very common childhood game. The name comes, of...

And? @AlViking asked how fail forward could be done in D&D. I provided a pretty straightforward example. Given that some people seem to think that skill challenges can be done in 5e D&D, presumably that shows how "fail forward" could be done in 5e as well.

What do you mean? I haven't argued against examples - the only example offered was by me, and @Enrahim told me that I was wrong. So I'm asking if there is an example. I mean, do you have one in mind? If not, what do you think the point of the category is?

Speaking of which, I did find this - from the introduction to the blog - interesting: You’re reading a rpg theory article about a rather specialized topic; even if you’ve played roleplaying games for years, it’s possible that the ideas and concerns expressed in this article are things you have...

It might change my current opinion that "weird entanglement" is a spurious category for analysing RPGs.

I don't think this is right at all. As @Campbell in this thread has pointed out, it's easy to have "simulationist" or "exploratory" play where what is explored is "problems of the human condition". Those who love Planescape in D&D often laud it for this, too.

But the sort of game you play wouldn't have "weird entanglement", would it? I'm asking what RPG actually exhibits this "weird entanglement", where (i) skill rolls are intended to have no meaning or consequence in the fiction except how well the PC performs the requisite bodily motions and (ii)...
