D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

That might have been a reference to the real world phenomenon of bars getting more interesting after each beer. Aw! You don't allow PCs that use magic, hoard gold, and kill on the daily? The OP observation on rule zero points to WotC suggesting there is one true way: the rule book's way. Can...

D&D General Crossbow and Bow House Rules

"Better" is subjective. How are you using it? Why doesn't the crossbow expert feat meet your needs?

    D&D 5E (2024) Overthinking Long Rest in 2024

Seconded, except light roasts are the IPAs of coffee.

Playing in Person Is Just Better (for me)

Discursive RPGs are inherently a conversation. Computer RPGs, not so much. But yeah, discourse is better in person. Don't fret. Some a lot of people form their opinions from what others post online.

D&D General Powering Up and Delayed Actions

It works great in Modos RPG. I suppose D&D could benefit from it, too . . . except that D&D is built on an assumption that everyone gets one or more attack actions per round. Your PCs might get bored. And what if the attack that PCs anxiously anticipated for a round misses? I think you'd be...

    D&D 5E (2024) Adjusting Difficulty

I like to set those expectations up with familiar concepts. So session zero provides relationships and watchmen provide the head bashing. See my theory on WotC breaking it so players can pay WotC to fix it.

    Worlds of Design: Harmony

That sounds like . . . Boeing. Which is an excellent example of inharmonious. My metric for harmony is generally if I can read through the whole rule book without throwing it across the room. I'll discuss the inharmonious aspects in my next post. Ga'mes Modular appeal to the GM's sense of...

Someone Planted an Annoyatron in My Office and I Just Found It. What Next?

You have to start by making a big deal of it at meetings. Get dramatic about how IMPOSSIBLY ANNOYING it is. Then subtly watch to see who gets the most enjoyment out of it. That person is your target.

D&D General It's 2034, and the new PHB is in your hands.

Tell me about it. Yah, shoo-er. Paap comes in pints. But we take beer to the lake, not paap, and doont go throwin' no rocks in. You might wake the jaackelope, an' he scares the walleye. Might as well throw yourself in . . .

D&D General It's 2034, and the new PHB is in your hands.

This is the most likely, given that "books" won't survive the Great Nerd Purge of 2025. I'd pay money to see this. Thanks for the inspiration hero point!

    D&D 5E (2024) Why aren't you using 5e 2024?

    Because it's not 5e anymore?

    D&D 5E (2024) Adjusting Difficulty

Oh, the paladin had a talk with the barbarian who was getting all the barbarian-only items. She still wouldn't share. So the paladin gathered up the surplus items while the barbarian was sleeping and left them in a cache away from the road. "A thief must have come by in the night!" It's not...

D&D 5E (2024) WOTC Canceling 2024 Dungeon Masters Guide physical orders (Deja Vu All Over Again)

Funny. I didn't get any emails about my orders getting screwed up. But then, I didn't place them in the first place...? How many orders has Kobold Press canceled?

Personal enlightenment in a fantasy setting

Always good to have the potential for PC-dismemberment. More selfless would be volunteering to take the place of the wrongfully imprisoned man. Coincidentally, the man was imprisoned in an escapable dungeon. If only he had the skill (and comrades) to do the escaping! Selfless: doing...

D&D 5E (2024) Did you make up your mind about 5.24?

The mantra for 2024 might just be "let's break it and let them pay us to fix it." Time will tell.

D&D 5E (2024) How do I disarm traps? Does Thieves' Tools do anything?

Hey, now. WotC was very clear that they're not publishing a new edition. If you want to disregard the extant skill rules while reading the new book . . .

D&D 5E (2024) How do I disarm traps? Does Thieves' Tools do anything?

Less "I'm making this up" and more "WotC screwed up their rules, so I'll make an educated guess." Yeah, anyone with 25 gold can buy Thieves' Tools (provided you don't draw the watch's attention to the fence who is selling them), but not everyone gets proficiency with TT, so we're still talking...

D&D 5E (2024) How do I disarm traps? Does Thieves' Tools do anything?

Let's also note the near redundancy of Thief Rogue. I'm going with this: because rogues are awesome, they can disarm anything with a DC 15 Dex/Tools check. Everyone else has to play by the other rules. Because, why couldn't anyone else disarm a (located) trap, too? It doesn't matter if a...
