    D&D 5E (2024) Is Monster Manual 2025 compatible with 2014 Characters?

To the extent that I interpreted correctly, trying to use a monster with an inaccurate CR isn't a non-choice. It's just more difficult to apply it correctly, since the average party CR has changed, and apparently some old CRs weren't accurate to begin with. Correct application, in this...

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

Nothing wrong. It just drives me nuts when players assume that they must make a certain type of character.

    D&D 5E (2024) Is Monster Manual 2025 compatible with 2014 Characters?

Chris Perkins: "fully compatible." I wouldn't say the DM has fewer choices, though. They're just more difficult choices.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

This makes Minnesota-nice steam come out of my GM ears. "Oh, you 'need' a healer? And one with darkvision, since no one in the group has darkvision? Yeah, okay. Do whatever you want to do!"

When Combat Isn't Always *About* Combat

Hellblade 2 uses waves to wash the PC away, albeit not in combat. More spectacularly, a raging fire giant will burn the PC to a cinder if she's not behind cover when the fire blows in. Skyrim has a more subdued take: in the demiplane of Apocrypha, the darkness causes pain (possibly from the...

Friends, Gamers, Editors, Lend Me Your Ears! (New Rules)

I'll probably expand the Non-Combat Conflict section to better answer these questions. But since it's the chassis that combat is built on, I don't want to build the same car twice. Progress is about reframing the scene. The fiction and the extended conflict move in tandem. The Guide asks for...

Friends, Gamers, Editors, Lend Me Your Ears! (New Rules)

Well, all of the above. The rules work from a purely logical perspective, so the presentation of how to engage is important. Otherwise, the game's not playable, even if the gears don't grind. Please let me know if these revisions resolve your notes: Possibilities are endless, so...

    Second person plural pronoun

Thank thee. "You" is already plural. I . . . wouldn't look to the South for grammatical guidance. Ain't that right?

Friends, Gamers, Editors, Lend Me Your Ears! (New Rules)

At your recommendation, I was able to grab the Paragon SRD off the web. I didn't see a lot of detail to the player narration, though. The GM presents a threat ("Hazard"), everyone rolls, PCs who didn't win describe their "suffering," and the PC who wins (if any) uses cues from Name, Domain...

Friends, Gamers, Editors, Lend Me Your Ears! (New Rules)

Thanks for taking a look, pemerton. You've got me questioning my decision to leave "what's a GM" and "how to role-play" out of the module 🤓 But I'll set that aside for now. Here are some attempts at clarification, in case a little clarity inspires you to let me know how I might word things...

Theater of the Mind and VTTs: Oh Brave New World...

It's a good thing that I went on, in the same post, to recommend showing a map briefly when players have problems. Terrain doesn't cease to exist just because it's not on a map.

Friends, Gamers, Editors, Lend Me Your Ears! (New Rules)

Right. Bite-sized chunks. Well, the Getting Started section doesn't cover anything you don't already know (except maybe the GM's ability to shape the game as well as the setting), so here's the most basic of basics (and the rule numbers it addresses, 002 and 003): The Contest (002, 003) Before...

    D&D 5E (2024) Diseases

Sounds like an opportunity for a DM's Guild sourcebook. Although I bet EN5ider has plenty of material there, already. I'm wondering if the WotC marketing division just found that "disease" ranks right up there in term popularity with "race."

D&D General Anyone else notice this?

Full heal on rest, negligible chance of perma-death, roll to solve all problems, Ooh Shiny classes out the door . . . WotC is just going after its market. I'd call that N'Sync.

Hex Minimap Tiles Project & Sample

I think I see Waldo! Yes, I like the color tiles much better. This looks like a great project for GM-less / GM-sharing games. Are there rocks ahead? "If there are, we'll all be dead!"

Worlds of Design: A Pretty High Price

Has "ooh, shiny!" leaked into RPGs? I submit Monte Cook Games' Invisible Sun and Darrington Press's Daggerheart for consideration. Not an RPG (by design), but Cards Against Humanity is a great example of function succeeding over form.
