How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

Uh, you do realize that Lois has had super powers numerous times including being Super Girl with a wig and all right? But my point is that the definition of human, when boosted to the levels that Batman is routinely shown to have, is meaingless. "Batman is just a normal human!" "Except when...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

I can see where some of the replies are coming from but, and its just my opinion, if we take out gear, that essentially means Iron Man, Green Lantern, Colossus, Captain Atom, and a majority of characters in those natures are 'human' because they're not always in a 'super' hero state. The round...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

So what we're saying is that characters like Batman can overcome injuries that would lead to permanent crippling effects, outfight the greatest martial artists, use alien technology, create technology that is super human (i.e. when he's fighting Predators in essentially Iron Man armor), etc...

How would you houserule (nerf) magic at high levels.

But you can't have your cake and eat it too. In 4e, things are 'flat', but now instead of spellcasters we have roles. Groups without a good leader capable of healing, regardless of the damage from the glass ninjas (aka strikers) are going to be in a world of hurt. Does that make strikers 4e...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

So when he takes Lady Shive out with one punch, one of the #1 martial artist that's plot protection? When he's using alien technology that no one else can understand, that's plot protection? We can talk about normal human all we want but when you read some of Morrison's 'Bat God' bits in JLA...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

I'm chuckling at all of the post talking about how Batman isn't super human. Well, he has all of these advantages and... Listen, he's fought Superman several times. He's fought White Martians. He's devised plans to take out the JLA (that were used by others quite successfully.) None of this...

How would you houserule (nerf) magic at high levels.

In future terms of the 'group effort' though, do people hate clerics because they're the healers? It would be immense bs to cry foul when the wizard uses a spell to help the fighter like bulls strength but thumbs up when the cleric casts raise dead no?

    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

But all of those arguements really only matter when it's PvP. It's one of the things I think people tend to forget that at its core gaming examples, it's expected that the party works together no?

How would you houserule (nerf) magic at high levels.

Any fighter that doesn't take advantage of the abilities a wizard/cleric/etc... can give him is a stupid fighter. "Hey, you want stoneskin." Weeping in the corner. "I don't need you." Do people not get that D&D is a GROUP effort?

How would you houserule (nerf) magic at high levels.

Eh? Nothing counters other magic? Stoneskin doesn't negate all damage, just reduces it. Various spells like Grease aren't impossible to overcome (balance dc 10 at half movement and nothing against people flying)... A quick stab to the head is plenty of counter versus magic.

Dungeon Master's Kit is redundant. And you'd best be spreading that xp around! :p

    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

It's funny you put it that way. In one of Rich Baker's stories in the Forgotten Realms elf anthology, its explained that the magic is coming from life force energies. To bypass that, one wizard uses demonic energies. Things don't turn out well for him.

As opposed to the fighter who can withstand fireballs, drops of 100 feet or more and break through adamantine walls with a single attack? Dude, in D&D, they're all superheroes.

    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

The funny thing, in in 4e, I totally 'gork' this type of experience.

    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

Wizards perform a certain amount of spell research between adventurers. Each time a character attains a new wizard level, she gains two-spells of her choice to add to her spellbook. These spells represent the results of her research. pg. 178 Now we can argue that it doesn't work that way in...

There's also another limitation. It's magic. Dispel Magic and Anti-Magic fields and Magic Dead Zones will put the hurting on that and many other spells.

    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

Let the rest of the party handle the damage dealing eh? Man, it's one of the reasons I enjoy these conversations. Different venues and opinions. Most of the wizards in the games I've been in or run have been basically, 'battle' wizards. The thought of letting the other characters deal out the...

    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

Let's see... all 0-level, 1st level (wasn't clean to some as I wrote all o level and then the 1st level) charm person, summon monster I, and sleep, plus one of these spells of your choice per point of intelligence bonus: cause fear, color spray, magic missile and silent image. (Man, I had...

How would you houserule (nerf) magic at high levels.

Back to the topic at hand. The nerf. Oneo f the neat things about forgotten Realms in 2nd ed was that they broke spells down into different levels of availability. Might not work for everyone but spell selection is the first quick and easy fix.
