    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

But it's more than 600 gp. It's 600 gp for the spell book. It's another 300 gp for the spells (if they're not his standards.) Which doesn't count the fact, which has been completely ignored in almost all of these conversations about wizards, that he STILL has to roll to learn them. Easy? Yup...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

It appears to me that in many works of modern fiction, that the warrior and the wizard are the same character. Morlock from the various books by James Enge starting with Blood of Ambrosia. Rand from Wheel of Time. Elric from Stormbringer and other books. etc...

How would you houserule (nerf) magic at high levels.

Eh? How many people were in Beowulf's party? I'm really trying to understand the significance of this example and can only come up with none.

    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

But... and maybe it's just me here, you don't get your spells for free in the first place. Well, not all of them. There's a base cost for spells. there's a base cost for the spellbook itself and to put spells into the book. Mateials and cost for a spell is 100gp per page per spell level. A...

Dungeon #187 - first issue with 0 adventures?

I don't believe that for a second. Dungeon and Dragon has become an almost 100% in-house magazine if you look only at the authors since most of 'em are one dude eh? I mean, bless Robert and Bruce and some of the others but it ain't the magazine with new faces it once was.

    Dwarven Forge $500 Shopping Spree!

Good deal. In terms of mini-size though, as long as the minis are on ye old 1" bases you shouldn't have problems as I know many companies have ratched their sizes upward so that 28mm-32mm is the new standard.

But they don't necessarilyh have to cast that on themselves. They could be casting it on the fighter in full plate.

    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

And my question becomes... you can't have invisibility and polymorph self AND firewall and evard's unless your GM is really doling out essentially unlimited downtime and unlimited access to spells and more importantly, scrolls. If that's the case, I'm trying to figure where other classes in...

    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

I guess my question then becomes, if pure survivability the only potential thing we're looking at? At 7th level some of the beasties you're fighting are using area effect attacks and 7th level hit points ain't exactly a massive guarantee of survival. In addition, to cast either one of those TWO...

    New Legends & Lore

Talking about starting a character is one thing. Talk about advancing that character at various levels is completely another. and on a sidenote, bashing Rolemaster? One of the first games where you could take skills you weren't specialized in? So not cool! :hmm:

    The new girl

52 Weeks, 52 Miniatures Mike Mearls started out the old 52 minis in 52 weeks blog. I've been the more frequent poster lately but that's not true for the last post!

    Wizards: Squishy or All Powerful?

On the old threads talking about game design, wizards, literature, nerfing wizards, etc..., I've posted a few times that while I know that wizards and other spellcasters tend to have a lot of potential options, in actual game play that doesn't tend to make them all powerful. But that's just my...

How would you houserule (nerf) magic at high levels.

In your opinion, at what level does this happen? 1st 5th 10th 15th 20th And what set of stats do you need to accomplish it? I'm very curious because as I've noted, our experiences are very different. In my own experiences, most of the wizards go squish real quick if they're not careful...

How would you houserule (nerf) magic at high levels.

It's not only that, but you sacrifice, usually feats, to do that. This prevents a whole slew of other options, like crafting magic items, say, from being open. It's a limited focus. One thing I wonder when I read some of the conversations like this, is what are these people's actual play...

How would you houserule (nerf) magic at high levels.

It has not been my experience that SR is hilariously and easily bypassed. It has also not been my experience that "when wizards don't blast" as most wizards, well at least in the games I've been in or run, have had the 'blasting' wizard. Our experiences must have worlds of differences where...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

"Likewise, skills were generally acted out rather then rolled for - and at most you rolled your attribute. The game was highly narrative, not "simulationist." There was no tie ropes skill - you were an adventurer, you knew how to tie a damn knot!"

Dragon 397 - Table of Contents

In terms of trying to make WoTC out to be lairs... well, they've pretty much done themselves in here. They have very little 'creed' to share. "Where's the Dark Sun and Essentials material?" "It's coming." and hey, it was. Just not for you know, the people who were waiting for it for the old...

How would you houserule (nerf) magic at high levels.

How does this differ from magic item use though? High level characters of all sorts will have access to many of the things on your list that do the same thing as a spell with no real cost associated with it ranging from various potions and carpets of flying to magic gates and other classic...

Is old school a good way to introduce younger players to D&D?

I'm going against the complete grain here and say the old Marvel Super Heroes that used the FASERIP system. Just change the foes and setting and it works well for a 'Conan' style game and has enough complexity that if you want to add things like a sorcerer supreme you can. The older editions...
