    AD&D1 giants

So the circle is complete: all 3e giants have the same heights they had in 1e.

    AD&D1 giants

You know, I don't think I realized this: 3e kept the 2nd edition HD increases, but shrunk most of the giants back down to 1e heights. Assuming your memory is right, 3e Hill (10-1/2 ft) and stone (12 ft) giants are slightly taller than they were in 1e, but the rest are about the same...

    AD&D1 giants

Those heights you list are for the giants as presented in the basic D&D system (Expert set), which were significantly larger than their 1st edition AD&D counterparts. Second edition AD&D, in addition to giving giants more HD, also gave them a height boost: Hill Giants: 16' Stone Giants: 18'...

Help! Running B10: Night’s Dark Terror

I could certainly see that mileage would vary greatly with this module based on the temperament of the players. Two votes for the statues -- sounds like that encounter's a keeper.

    Outstanding find! Many thanks.

Help! Running B10: Night’s Dark Terror

As an alternative, I'm also considering excising most of the Iron Ring stuff -- it's true that they don't play much of a role in the all-important Lost Valley chapter -- then starting the PCs a couple chapters later in Threshold (maybe with a showdown with Golthar there) and pushing most of the...

    Identify this 1E artist?

Could also be Tim Truman, but really hard to say.

So what is your favorite Dungeon adventure, ever?

I'm working on a conversion of Kingdom of the Ghouls. My players are currently assaulting the Fane of Lolth from D3. After that we'll be on hiatus for a couple of months (maternity leave for a couple of players). When we pick up they'll spend some time on the Sunless Sea, and from there it's the...

Any DMs here ever have an assistant DM?

I had a guy who was the session coordinator -- he scheduled the game sessions, secured the locations, coordinated all the players. This was something like 10 guys spread out over 3 states for over 11 years. And a few of these dudes were . . . to put it charitably . . . rather resistant to...

Help! Running B10: Night’s Dark Terror

Interesting: I haven't read a lot of negative comments about this one. Was the problem that the adventure was too open for your group? Lots of aimless wandering? Thanks for the tip on the statues. That encounter hadn't jumped out a me on the first read.

So what is your favorite Dungeon adventure, ever?

"Kingdom of the Ghouls," no doubt. For me, this was the one 2e adventure that really recaptured some of the magic of the classic 1st edition modules like D1-2-3. The last 3 years or so have seen many great adventures in Dungeon, though. Lots of those Age of Worms ones were fantastic. I...

    AD&D1 giants

Given that the giant HD range is so inconsistent with other monsters in the MM, it might be worthwhile to dig out the monster card entries to see if anything was changed. The cards incorporated a lot of super-obscure errata and might give you a definitive answer. (Although my money's on A).

Help! Running B10: Night’s Dark Terror

Initial Thoughts Spoilers Follow – BEWARE! I think I want to start the adventure close to the mid-point of the module, in the ruins of Xitiqa, and the climactic confrontation with Golthar, the leader of the secretive and nefarious organization known as the Iron Ring. I want the players to...

Help! Running B10: Night’s Dark Terror

Help! Running B10: Night’s Dark Terror So a dear friend and long-time player in my various campaigns recently announced that he has joined the army for a four-year stint. He did four years in the marines about 12 years ago, but this decision was out of the blue and so came as something of a...

Is an Edition Warz moritorium possible?

Yeah, I've been pretty discouraged by the last week or so of EnWorld: very tedious and irritating. I haven't seen a lot of forum rules broken outright, but I think I'm seeing an awful lot of bending -- many passive-aggressive and baiting posts that really only seem intended to nudge the limits...

    Paint Set for a Beginner

It's been over 20 years since I have painted a mini . . . my pots are all dried up and the companies I used to buy from are out of business. But I bought Paizo's "Dark Elf Sanctum" Compleat Encounter, which came with some excellent miniatures. I'd like to paint them, so I need a nice basic paint...

A thing about d20 D&D I didn't like, and still don't know why it was done...

I'm not sure I understand how the combat example in the OP relates to the premise.

Does 3E/3.5 dictate a certain style of play?

Great post -- I strongly agree with just about everything you wrote here. In addition, I find it much, much easier as a DM to evaluate new rules or crunchy bits in 3e because of the mechanical consistency throughout the system. I played around with a lot of variant rules back in 1st edition --...

Do you plan to grab the new Star Wars Saga book to use for D&D?

I originally had little interest in it, but I am intrigued by the streamlined skill system. I think the 3e skill systems is pretty good (and certainly far better than the old non-weapon proficiencies), but it still seems not quite there.

To James Jacobs: A Growing Problem with Dungeon Magazine

To me, Dungeon's got the mix almost perfect . . . enough information for me to run the encounters, and to occasionally tempt me to pick up a new supplement or two, but not so much that I find it distracting. I have a hard enough time remembering what some of the higher level core spells do, I...
