The perfect Christmas gift for your gaming group.

I've been toying with doing something like this for a while, and I think you've sold me. That is full of much awesome.

In which D&D product did Orcus die?

I'm pretty sure Orcus "died" offstage. When 2e came out in 1989, of course, demons and devils were removed from the game entirely. This removal was a stupid and weak-kneed sop to the "Angry Mothers from Heck" movement, and TSR regretted the decision almost from the start. In 1991 demons and...

The Open Gaming License: Almost 10 Years Later

A main driver behind the OGL was the fact that some products . . . like adventures . . . were not profitable for WotC. The thinking was that with the OGL, 3PPs would be able to step in and provide those products. Based on the complaints I've heard about 4e Dungeon, it sounds like this lack was...

The Open Gaming License: Almost 10 Years Later

Somewhere there's a good, very pertinent quote from Dancey back before 4e or the GSL ever hit the street. Basically he said that WotC had a lot of incentive to keep D&D open, because if they ever tried to move away from the OGL in 4e, they would only end up creating their own competition. In...

The Open Gaming License: Almost 10 Years Later

First there were rumors. And they didn't make much sense. Wizards was going to give away its IP? To anyone? How can you make money off that model? I think the first real chunk of info came in an interview Ryan Dancey gave to EN World back on March 19, 2000. (Thank Pelor for the Internet...

The Magic Items that WotC cannot publish

This article finally made me understand the claim that "4e feels more like 1e than any other edition." It brought me back to the good old days when EGG admitted to using all sorts of variant rules and shortcuts in his house game, while simultaneously admonishing all civilian DMs to use only...

Paizo Pathfinder (AP & Modules) Monster Index

I'd love to hear some more details on those new devils!

    Trailblazer Monster Book

I just want to reiterate how much I appreciate Trailblazer: this is a fantastically helpful product, and the analysis of the d20 system's spine alone would make it worth the price of admission. I've seen some mention of a monster book. Is this still in the works? As a monster junkie I'd love to...

What Science Fiction Games are being played these days?

I've been having crazy fun with Mongoose Traveller. I haven't bought many of the Mongoose supplements, though I can say their Spinward Marches book is excellent. The beauty of MGT, though, is that it plays very well with classic Traveller and MegaTraveller material. I bought some of Marc...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Bestiary - Discussion

You know, some guy named Erik Mona came up with a very cool list of demon lord names for Green Ronin's Armies of the Abyss. And I think they're all open content. Sort of a shame no one ever picked up that list and ran with it . . .

Mearls talks about his inspiration for the 4e classes

The Huntsmen of Annuvin -- a very cool idea. Lewis Pulsipher did a 1e AD&D interpretation that appeared in Dragon magazine No. 40 (August 1980). And I did my own 3.5e conversion of Pulsipher's take.

    Hordes

The swarm approach is definitely the way to go, particularly with gibberlings. Somewhere I think I rewrote them accordingly. I'll have to check the files . . .

    Update OGL Gargoyle

Thanks -- I hadn't worked much with d20 monsters for a while, and I had kind of missed it.

    Update OGL Gargoyle

Gargoyles were magical beasts (earth) in 3.0, and changed to monstrous humanoids (earth) in 3.5. I really never understood the change -- all it does is lower the HD from d10 to d8 and swaps the good Reflex save for a good Will save, and I don't think either change better models a gargoyle. I...

Grognards: Was the Dex Check a Common House Rule Before 1e?

I think the most influential proponent of using ability scores to resolve task checks within D&D was probably Katherine Kerr in her article "You've Always Got a Chance" in Dragon 68 (December 1982). This was a classic roll-under mechanic, but the beauty was it didn't require yet another...

Pathfinder 1E I think Paizo gets it.

I've been getting pretty heavily into Mongoose Traveller lately, which also makes great use of the OGL. Combined with Marc Miller's various (and all very generous) licensing and fan use policies, I am absolutely struck by how vastly superior this all is as a business model to what WotC is doing...

    Revised GSL TODAY!

Do I have this right? The "decency clause" was *not* in the original d20STL, but added in about the same time the Book of Erotic Might was about to launch. It seems like there was one other significant change made at the same time, but I'm blanking on it.
