The best method of getting spells on level up that we ever used in 1e/2e was random rolling for them ;) Made for interesting builds, and lots of RP.

Indeed, Bioware or Black Isle-which-is-now-Obsidian. Baldur's Gate to Icewind Dale were my favorites. Heck, I'd even play a remaster, even if it stayed 2e.
