D&D 5E (2014) To Be or Not to Be: Legendary

Yep, to gamist for my designer / DM taste, fine if I was a player though.

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

I always thought of HP and surges as both vitality in 4e. The fact that they interacted the way they did made it clear to me. IMO, there are no wound points in 4e (or any edition of D&D). For us, HP & HS did not fulfill our desire for wound points. It was 4e that gave us the idea to create...

Pathfinder to Release Lost Omens: Draconic Codex in December

Pretty cool, I am a bit tired of his style but it is still fun! That giant undead looks very interesting!

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

I think I am being unclear. I don't understand how you think your suggestion is an improvement to what we are already doing. If anything, I see your proposal as unnecessarily confusing/conflating the two pools. The value, IMO, of the way we do it is that they are separate. What, in your mind, is...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

I am not quite following what you are asking / suggesting. To hopefully help, I will explain what we do in more detail. Hit Points: No different than standard 5e. Calculated the same and function the same. Recovered that same (or whatever rest and recovery variant you want) Bloodied Hit...

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

Like I have said many times - everyone is different! The MM version is the only 2024 core book art (that I can think of) that I would actively want replaced. I dislike it on many levels. The setting sun is indeed a nice touch, but that is it for me.

D&D 5E (2014) To Be or Not to Be: Legendary

Did you look at the mythic version (3rd statblock in the OP). I agree the mythic trait is the way to go. It gives a lot more design flexibility.

D&D 5E (2014) To Be or Not to Be: Legendary

Thank you for your thoughts! They are very helpful. I do want to be clear, the intent of this thread was not about tier 4 design. It was to discuss legendary vs non-legendary solos. Interesting list. I am DMing tier 4 now and my PCs are not doing anything close to this! One issue (and also a...

D&D 5E (2014) To Be or Not to Be: Legendary

I do like that the 2024 MM has a few monsters that do this, that made me confident to included it as well!

D&D 5E (2014) To Be or Not to Be: Legendary

You are correct. My point it that I find legendary actions rarely actually change the battlefield. Legendary actions are to weak, IME, to have the impact you suggest. If I have the choice, I prefer 1 impactful off-turn reaction than 3 ineffective legendary actions. Now, these issues can...

GOD RULES: Player's Guide (5e) Kickstarter Pre-Launch Page

Yes, and it is all very theoretical. I am not likely to ever finish my ideas at this point - that is why we need your book so much! ;)

D&D 5E (2014) To Be or Not to Be: Legendary

It is also worth noting that the dragon has a high initiative bonus (+14) and good save bonuses (except intelligence), so it has a good chance of acting first and resisting attempts to lock it down. However, I feel like the mythic version takes care of all issues IMO.

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

For me, I think the MM Wyvern is on the verge of being detrimentally bad. Particularly when there is a such a good one in the PHB! It is the worst image in the core books I think (could be wrong, I haven't gone through the PHB in detail). MM Wyvern PHB Wyvern

D&D 5E (2014) To Be or Not to Be: Legendary

The issue I have with high level monster design is the constraints of the WotC CR system. I have been planning to do monsters by level for a while now, to alleviate this problem. I just haven't pull the trigger yet.

D&D 5E (2014) To Be or Not to Be: Legendary

Every group is different. My level 17 group is mostly fighters and they get about 40-45 DPR typically, and twice that when they nova. I will point out that the dragon is probably going first, hitting with enough damage to down a PC. Then after the first PC's turn (assuming the damage it) it can...

D&D 5E (2014) To Be or Not to Be: Legendary

Wow, that is interesting. That is not my experience at all. Anytime you can mess with the PCs action economy has always worked for me. Not to mention the dragon does of off turn control options.

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

Thank you again for responding! Here are my thoughts. Interesting I didn't have the impression at all. Everyone is different. It is not my favorite style either, but it would matter more to me in the MM than here. I am a lot more forgiving in the PHB. It (the PHB) has to appeal to a much...
