I'll use my first campaign of the new edition to test out everything I can. That is, I intend to include all the PHB races, probably sticking more or less to the fluff presented in the book. Oh, but I'll probably also find a place for gnomes and some other PC races from the MM, too.

I agree with the OP. All characters being able to contribute uniquely both in and out of combat is a good thing.

IME, this is very campaign-specific. In a 3-session mini-campaign I DMed last summer, one of the PCs was a beguiler who never lived up to his full potential due to the fast-paced and combat-heavy nature of that campaign.
