Absolutely. 4e does for me exactly what i always wanted D&D to do for me. That's my honest opinion. ^^

I came into the game by saving the unicorn, and I turned out alright. I'll agree that it might not be a perfect representation of D&D, but the 3.0 starter game definitely gave me an interest the larger game, and I've been DMing nonstop ever since. I think the $17 starter set sounds fantastic.

The rarity of character deaths is far more dependent on the GM than the system. So far, I haven't observed a difference between 3e-4e.

Same here. 80% of the "monsters" I've used in 3.X have been race-class-and-level NPCs, with the remainder being either MM1 or homebrew.
