    Is "Old School" Overrated?

If you can embrace the simplicity of old school while using the common sense reworkings of the modern game systems (3rd edition in particular) then you have an "old school" game that doesn't feel like it's taking a giant step backwards. That's why the old school game I like (and the one my kids...

How many folks are still playing/running 3e?

I've been running a Pathfinder beta game for the past year and will be switching to the full/final version next month. I would be playing 3.5 if the changes Pathfinder made to the rules weren't better on the whole.

    Dealing with an "oldschool" DM

It sounds to me like the DM is rebalancing things to fit his preference. Skimping on XP and treasure is the tactic you would take to keep players from gaining levels too fast. In 3rd edition, it's a perfectly valid approach and is in the rules. I really don't see why it wouldn't work for 4E as...

    your favorite adventure paths/mega-dungeons/campaign modules?

One mega-mega dungeon tops my list. My reason for liking it is that there is a focus to it, it contains a great deal of diversity in terms of enemies and regional "powers" within different locations of the dungeon, it is fully self contained, and IT'S FINISHED (unlike certain other mega dungeons...

Pathfinder 1E [Pathfinder] Planning on switching to Pathfinder?

I've been running the beta for the past year, so this won't exactly be switching for me.

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder First Print Run Sold Out

Technically speaking, I don't even think it would have to be tossed into the end credits. We all suffer through splash screens on our way into just about any game. One splash screen could very easily contain a bunch of text that includes the OGL as well as any other open content used. As long as...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder First Print Run Sold Out

I was just thinking the same thing. Pathfinder video games are totally doable without worrying about the license as long as you aren't trying to make money from it. And of course that kind of defeats the purpose. One thing that occurs to me is that there would need to be a significant difference...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder First Print Run Sold Out

This is a good day for gaming. Great job Paizo!

How is Traveller? Looking for a Space RPG...

I'm in the process of converting the Reign of Discordia setting over to Traveller, and as a result, have been playing it since about May. I'm not quite sure how to say this without sensationalizing it, because that isn't exactly my intention, but I haven't had this much fun playing or running an...

    The real future of D&D

No more rulebooks, no more having trouble finding the right minis to represent your monsters (not a problem until you own crates full of WotC minis). Imagine this technology combined with people in different locations. You could still have your gaming group even after everyone has moved away...

The Bastardization of the Game: Edition Purity versus Edition Innovation

First to answer the question - I've mixed and matched rules from one edition to another since I was first introduced to D&D. At first I literally didn't know any better, but later on it was just a matter of thinking that one book might handle something better than the system native to the...

Pathfinder 1E Will Pathfinder be the fix?

Well, I also find it unsettling that when Azathoth wakes up, it's immediately game over. It's a strategy game, not a roleplaying game, so there are bound to be some things that don't convert properly. At least you can still win the game if the Great Old One awakens.

    Pros and Cons

Play Descent by FFG. It is classified as a tactical strategy game. Then play 4E. Tell me if they seem more similar to each other than 4E does to 3.5 and previous editions. Now play 1E (or even 2E for that matter). It is classified as a roleplaying game. Then play 3.5 (or, as you mentioned...

Pathfinder 1E Will Pathfinder be the fix?

I've been scratching that itch with Pathfinder Beta and Castles and Crusades for a while now. I've also developed a newfound love for Arkham Horror and I've been scratching a lot of itch with that game lately.

Call of Cthulhu is the one true roleplaying game. All others are dinner.

    How Hit Points Ruin SoD

I think that hit points that increase endlessly ruin SOD. For instance, the old complaint that a high level fighter is cornered by seriously nasty enemies atop a mountain. She decides that rather than facing the monsters and dying, she'll jump off the mountain, take a relatively small amount of...

    Suggest an RPG (not D&D)

My group has been having a lot of fun with Mongoose's version of Traveller. If you dig scifi, it's hard to go wrong here because it plays fast, harkening back to the old days of RPGs, while giving you a lot of fun options.

    What's Mystara's Hook?

There are certain settings that WotC can repackage for any setting and I'll buy it. Spelljammer is one of them, but I'm not sure that Mystara is. I agree with the assessment above that it's like a homebrew that grew by patches. There's nothing wrong with it; in fact it's pretty cool overall, but...

RDP: Reign of Discordia: Salvage Run is now on sale!

In my opinion, Salvage Run is the best support product we've done for the Reign of Discordia line. Andrew Bacon really did an amazing job on the adventure, and the art and cartography surpassed expectations.
