    Christmas Purchases

I picked up a couple of PDFs. I finally got Necromancer's City of Brass, and I also picked up Atomic Highway, which has been sitting in the #1 spot on RPGNow for several days now. Both are impressive.

Are the Retro Clones doing well?

I don't think that a new edition of any game has to be by the original publisher for it to be considered a new edition as opposed to a clone. Earthdawn is on its third edition, but it is no longer published by FASA. Traveller, RuneQuest, Babylon 5, Star Wars, and more have either switched...

    The Next Innovation in Gaming

Ironically enough, last semester I did a project proposal for a class I took that involved exactly what is being discussed here. Here's what I came up with: * 2 back-lit LCD screens that can be folded together. The size is the same as a standard book. The reason for this design is that the...

Are the Retro Clones doing well?

That's true, and something I didn't take into account. Mutant Future is a retro-clone, but it doesn't use much (if any) IP from D20 or D&D. In fact, it's just a recreation of an early version of Gamma World, while the IP is entirely its own.

Are the Retro Clones doing well?

I think there are two things that constitute a retro-clone. The first is that it mimicks an older style of play. The second is that it uses the OGL in a way that uses the D20 IP but not the mechanics, which is perfectly legal and defensible under the license. The idea is that you can copyright...

(Mongoose) Signs & Portents 76 - Ready to Download

Lots of interesting stuff in this one. So I take it that this is officially the end of the line for Babylon 5. Bittersweet.

    Falling off the 4ed bandwagon

Sure, but that requires starting with a game where 90% of it works for you. Mercurius seems to be describing being less than 90% happy.

    First D&D/RPG Experience

I was 11, and a good friend of mine was visiting. I had first become friends with this guy when I was four years old, and he had moved away when I was seven, so I was pretty excited when he came and stayed at my place for a week. So he showed up and we were looking for things to do when he...

    Falling off the 4ed bandwagon

The best advice I can give is to find a game that does what you want it to do from a mechanical perspective and play it. Trying to retrofit a game to suit your preferences seems silly when there are so many good games out there that would probably work for you as written. If rules light...

    One Campaign, Three Systems

You know how sometimes you have a TV show that just out of the blue changes formats for an episode? Think about the Buffy musical episode, or that episode of Supernatural where it was suddenly a sitcom. I think that's more or less what you're proposing. It could be fun to run the same characters...

Your favorite 3.x published campaign setting?

That will, of course, depend entirely upon sales. Unfortunately I don't have all the details just yet. Stay tuned....

Your favorite 3.x published campaign setting?

The news hasn't been widely publicized yet, but it is publicly available. Greg has big plans for the setting, including ways for people to get their hands on previously published books.

Your favorite 3.x published campaign setting?

Hey cool. Then this should make you happy: Epidemic Books - Oathbound Incidentally, I am finishing up work on my part of a new Oathbound book after the setting was inactive for about five years.

Your favorite 3.x published campaign setting?

I'll exclude Golarion because in my mind if it post-3.x. Some will debate me on that and probably make valid points, and if you want the truth, it is top on my list of current campaign settings. The one I want to talk about though, is DCC 35: Gazetteer of the Known Realms. What I like about it...

2009 State of EN World Address

Thre has actually been a lot of good news in the RPG business this year and it's good to see that ENWorld is also doing well. Cheers and I hope 2010 is a successful one for the site.

Forked from WotC Layoffs: Industry Size

Just for the sake of acknowledging all the RPG companies that have a full time staff of two or more, here's the list (to the best of my knowledge). If anyone has any additional insight, feel free to add to my list: WotC, Paizo, Mongoose, Super Genius, Games Workshop, White Wolf, Fantasy Flight...

    True20 question

There are optional rules to make it slightly less lethal, or put hit points back into it. Personally, I dig True20 because of its flexibility. I used it for a post apocalyptic game for a while, and I used it as the core set of rules for the Reign of Discordia setting, which is a space opera and...

    New PDF Software?

I highly recommend Foxit Phantom. It has all the features of Acrobat, but is a fraction of the price. I've been using it for a while now and I really like it. I also like the fact that it doesn't hog system resources like Acrobat/Adobe reader do. Here's the appropriate link: Foxit Software -...

WotC Layoffs - Rob Heinsoo, Logan Bonner, and Chris Sims

While this is definitely good advice and very true, a number of former WotC game designers now work for video game studios, and they end up doing much the same thing as they did before.

WotC Layoffs - Rob Heinsoo, Logan Bonner, and Chris Sims

In general, I agree with you to a point. Much of this argument comes down to whether you consider D&D a product or a creative vehicle for the writer. It's true that any game designer can step into the shoes left vacant by the previous person and still turn out decent, playable work. On the other...
