Worlds of Design: Too Much Dice?

This is another problem, actually - I think some dice are too similar-looking for new players, and even for experienced players: I've been gaming with polyhedrals for 40+ years, and I still have to make sure I'm grabbing a d8 and not a d10, and vice versa.

Let's talk about printing & shipping RPG books

Printing is printing, obviously, so the inside front and facing page is essentially 2 pages of printing. On top of that there's going to be a fee for binding/affixing it. Multiple that by 2 for the inside back cover and facing page. Multiply that by your print run. We don't print hardcover...

D&D 5E (2024) How would you change skills in 5.5e

As much as I generally like skills, this is great way to simplify things, which is a goal of mine if I were to every run something like D&D again. This has the advantage of getting players to think about their backgrounds more, in that one could grant advantage on checks relevant to the...

Let's talk about printing & shipping RPG books

I work in printing (for a state university system), so I might be able to answer some questions usefully. A couple things that will affect pricing are paper (aka stock, aka media) choices, binding choices, and if your interior pages are full bleed (printing that goes all the way to the edge of...

D&D 5E (2024) How would you change skills in 5.5e

This might be especially true given the popularity of actual-play shows that focus on player (and GM) performance.

Worlds of Design: Too Much Dice?

That's an excellent point, and I didn't mean to imply that. That said, "can't do math" and "read different kinds of dice results better than other" aren't necessarily the same thing.

Worlds of Design: Too Much Dice?

I think it would be a good idea to keep neurodivergence in mind when designing dice mechanics, but I don't know enough about how different neurodivergences interact with that kind of thing. EDIT: To expand: is it easier for a person with autism (or insert neurodivergence here) to add the...

D&D 5E (2024) How would you change skills in 5.5e

I've toyed with the idea of getting rid of Proficiencies and just folding all that into skills. Are you skilled with melee weapons? Are you skilled with Mason's tools? Are you skilled at playing the lute? Proficiency Bonus becomes Skilled Bonus. Proficiency disappears from the game. Some of this...

Streaming Services: First 2023 POWER RANKINGS (And what's up with Prime?)

So, they don't want to pay money to the people who made the shows that I pay a monthly fee to watch on their service. Cool. Got it.

Streaming Services: First 2023 POWER RANKINGS (And what's up with Prime?)

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but Disney is pulling content from D+ and from Hulu, for...REA$0N$!?!? I guess it's for tax breaks, so someone who understands that should chime in. So, it's time to bump the following to the top of your watchlist: • Be Our Chef • Best In Dough •...

Streaming Services: First 2023 POWER RANKINGS (And what's up with Prime?)

I talked to a web developer once, back when Amazon was still new-ish, about how hard it was to find dvd release dates on Blockbuster's website but how easy it was to find it on Amazon, and they pointed out that this is because Amazon started as an online marketplace, but Blockbuster started as a...

How did you convince your group to try something different?

Two things that have worked in our group: Propose a game in a setting or genre that everyone in the group can easily glom on to. I ran a short run of Masks between D&D 5E campaigns. Masks is a teen super-heroes game that does that sub-genre incredibly well. It emulates stuff like Young Justice...

    Picard Season 3

DS9 did that for me. Before people's heads explode: for whatever reason, somewhere in season 6 I felt like I was just watching it because it had "Star Trek" in the name. I just had lost interest. Go figure. But!!! A few years later a friend sold me on finishing up the series and loaned me his...

    Picard Season 3

I wonder if part of the problem was changing approaches to acting and directing, especially in Trek production circles. At the time of TOS, being animated and expressive was kind of the way you did things. Part of that is stage training, which was more common back then, part of it was working...

D&D 5E (2024) Do you actually like weapon masteries?

This is interesting! can you elaborate on what you think those would be, and/or what they would be like? Heck, start another thread if you want! I'm curious!

    Picard Season 3

I feel a little badly that I haven't really seen him in anything else, and I'd be open to suggestions of something he's really good in, because I hear he's been really good in some things. He's just so incredibly dull in ENT. I can't remember a single dramatic or funny or poignant Archer...

    Picard Season 3

I generally agree. I think the season arcs in both shows have felt stretched out and like they were playing for time. Maybe they should try do smaller arcs within a season, or shorter seasons.

D&D 5E (2024) Do you actually like weapon masteries?

In general they're just baked into each weapon, so there's only decisions if you can manage more than one mastery per weapon. I think just giving all martials combat maneuvers would achieve similar and more cohesive results.
