There is now 880 episodes of Star Trek and 13 movies

It's definitely great time to be a Star Trek fan - and lucky for me, I'm one of them! I grew up on re-runs of TOS, and it was one of those very formative cultural, pop-culture things for me. The show and the fan explosion of the 70s - with novels, technical manuals, etc. - was probably my...

There is now 880 episodes of Star Trek and 13 movies

Seth McFarlane seems to be very talented, but the opening song-and-dance number* he did at the Oscars put him on my no-fly list. I don't engage with anything he's involved in. * TRIGGER WARNING: reference to depictions of sexual violence. EDIT: added spoiler-blocked explanation with warning.

D&D 5E (2024) Rests should be dropped. Stop conflating survival mechanics with resource recovery.

I don't play D&D for the verisimilitude, but I do think the rest rules are weird and awkward. Maybe you could replace all that with some slightly expanded Hit Dice rules.

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

I'm not sure that's what the feat says: Mastery Property. Your training with weapons allows you to use the Mastery property of one kind of Simple or Martial weapon of your choice, provided you are proficient with it. Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can change the kind of weapon you chose...

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

The fact that you can't Cleave with a Greatsword is nonsense. I will probably homebrew these Masteries, so you can pick which one you want for your weapon, within reason, and can have multiple of them. If I'm misunderstanding how this works, let me know.

    D&D 5E (2024) What the 1e-2e Transition Can Tell Us About 5.5e

I hope - and believe! - this is true. WOTC has openly stated that one fo the goals of this revised edition is to make the game easier for new players to jump in and play. I'm not sure how far they can take that given the game that 5E is, but the changes they've announced (re-organizing...

Who Actually Has Time for Bloated Adventures?

Oooo, I absolutely need art! I'm kind of all about the art, but I'm an artist married to an artist, so I definitely have a predilection. Visuals are really important for my brain. That said, I don't necessarily need any art printed in the adventure (or sourcebook, or whatever). I will hunt...

D&D 5E (2024) Is the 2024 rules update a new edition? Argue about it here (not everywhere else)!

Based on what I've seen so far, it feels like D&D 5.25, so I went with "No!"

Who Actually Has Time for Bloated Adventures?

I feel your pain - deeply! I just finished running Tomb of Annihilation, and ran Tyranny of Dragons a few years back, and I am done running that kind of thing. There's so little guidance about how to adjust things, so few questions answered...I could go on about this, but who needs that rant...

    Picard Season 3

This latest episode felt like a lot of filler, with some great Data stuff and then the old gang finally all together in one room.

Rings of Power -- all opinions and spoilers welcome thread.

I would consider this person's work good art criticism if it weren't full of nitpicky side quests. I think they have some valid points, but there's a lot of opinion wankery going on there.

ToV Project Black Flag Reveal Its Official Title: 'Tales of the Valiant'!

I can't imagine caring about what it's called, but so far I've liked the playtest material and I look forward to having all these different takes on 5E from which to assemble my own Frankenstein 5E!!!

Rings of Power -- all opinions and spoilers welcome thread.

Wow, that is a very opinionated piece. The 37% thing is pretty damning, but I will ignore the rest. I don't know this guy from Adam. Is he reliable? Biased? I got nothin'. Anyway, I watched the whole thing and really enjoyed it. I watched it again with my daughter, and it works a lot better...

D&D 5E (2024) The impending mess that will be backwards compatibility

Some tables will have so much mixing and matching, from 5E, 1DD, Black Flag, C7d20, Level Up, etc, that this will just be part of the mix. Experienced players will be able to juggle this, but I worry about newer players - and I think WOTC will do what they can do mitigate that confusion, which...

    SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE - Official Trailer

Yeah, the best decision to see a movie in 3D I ever made was for Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse. It was unbelievably eye-popping. I'm so bored with mainstream animation styles that something like this is a feast for my starved eyes. But I get that some people just are not going to vibe with...

TV show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Starts Production in 2024

...and they were talking about an Academy movie in the mid-'80s! A couple months ago I was down on P+ Trek because it looks amazing but I've found a lot of the writing to ham-fisted and/or too in-my-face, but this 3rd season of Picard is really good and gets better every episode, so maybe...

Approaches to prep in RPGing - GMs, players, and what play is *about*

I wasn't mis-characterizing my experience, but I might have been overstating the no-/low-prep, passive players end of things that some other posters were complain about.
