I don't optimize. Forked Thread: Dragon Magazine #365's Character Concepts

Really? Care to post an example character build that you are playing now? I'd like to see just how un-optimized it is...

Dragon Magazine #365's Character Concepts: Masterful optimization advice by WotC

I didn't realize you could get sued for copy/pasting message board posts. If it's just a courtesy thing, just mark me down as tactless... :erm:

    Shadow Strike Rogue power bugged...

Consider H _ _ _ _ x _ _ F _ _ _ Hidden rogue H is moving to x using the Shadow Stride power. Adjacent to their second square of movement is an enemy Fighter. Now, if H's check at x beats F's passive Perception, H is hidden the whole way and enemy Fighter doesn't get an OA. If H's check at x...

Dragon Magazine #365's Character Concepts: Masterful optimization advice by WotC

So, remember how Dragon Magazine used to give us progressions for wonderful builds such as Ranger 10/Cleric 10 and Barbarian 10/Wizard 10 back in the era of 3.5? It seems like that tradition has continued for Dragon in the time of 4.0. WotC has once again set sail for fail and showed us that...

    Retraining basic attacks

Since Melee (or Ranged) Basic Attack is considered a power, it seems like you can retrain it with an At-Will from your paragon multiclass. Of course, one of the side-effects to this is, if you retrain the melee basic attack, you won't be able to take OAs, take advantage of the Warlord's Lead...

    Shifting when not adjacent?

I see it as part of the general rules. Everyone has to obide by the fact that shifting away doesn't provoke. Just as everyone has to obide by the fact that "normal" movement does provoke. Just as everyone has to obide by the fact that moving from a non-adjacent square into an adjacent...

    Opportunity Attacks and Qick Draw

I don't know... A Melee Basic Attack is a Standard Action to use. When you perform an Opportunity Attack, you are making a Melee Basic Attack. So essentially, you are also using a Standard Action to do this, even though it isn't your turn, because that is required when you make a Melee Basic...

    Shifting when not adjacent?

Ya know, the more I think about it, there might be multiple levels of specivity (sp?) depending on what you are comparing... General: Movement out of a square where you start out adjacent to an enemy provokes an OA. Specific: Shifting allows you to move out of a square adjacent to an opponent...

    Shifting when not adjacent?

No, those are all General rules. The general default rule is that If an enemy leaves a square adjacent to you, you can make an opportunity attack against that enemy as per the OA rules. Also, Forced movement does not provoke opportunity attacks or other opportunity actions is the general rule...

    Shifting when not adjacent?

While that is GENERALLY true, let's look at the SPECIFIC case for Polearm Gamble: If a non-adjacent enemy gets pushed into a square next to me, has he not entered a square adjacent to me? GENERALLY this would not matter, except in the SPECIFIC case of Polearm Gamble.

Why all the hype about initiative?

I haven't read any "hype" about initiative. Which posts are you referring to? Have a link (i'd like to read and join in the conversation).

    Dark Knight

Hmmm, wasn't it the Joker who said that he doesn't plan. He just acts? It is the police, the law makers, the judges, and Batman who makes plans. And he is there to see those plans undone. Paraphrasing as I can't remember his quote word for word. Of course, as you watch the movie, that quote...

The Fundamental Flaw with the Revised DCs

See, I would have went about Skill Challenges in a slightly different manner... First, I'm not sure I would have classified them as easy, moderate, or hard challenges. The first one doesn't really make any sense. If it is supposed to be a challenge, then it wouldn't be easy, would it? Still...

Minions with 1hp - Can anyone justify this?

That is pretty much the point of minions though... Why would you try to compare the mechanics of a game system with that of the real world? :hmm: Others have already listed multiple sources of fantasy where heroes (ie PCs) take out multiple opponents in one hit (ie Minions), so I don't think...

Minions with 1hp - Can anyone justify this?

Question... Where did you come up with the stats for the brambles? Are they in the DMG or something, or did you make them up? Just curious... If you (as a DM) made up the "stats" for the brambles, then you (as DM) can make up a rule stating that they do not deal damage to minions. The way...

Minions with 1hp - Can anyone justify this?

Also, the reason they have 1hp is so that effects like Temporary Hit points will stack on them. In which case, you will then have to do some bookkeeping if an attack can't a minion out who has 1hp +x temp hps.

    Retraining question...

From page 28 of the PHB, under Retraining. Where can I find my "class table", and where does it tell me when I can replace a power I know with a different one?
