D&D General Illusionists better in 2024

I have one core issue with the Illusionist - that if you want to really specialise in Illusions then pre-14 the GOOlock does it better. No minor image as a bonus action, but any of Silent Image, Disguise Self, or Invisibility at will. Illusions silent and component free. And on a much much...

    D&D 5E (2024) Warlock -- initial analyses

The extra attack on a crit or kill is melee only. The extra damage per attack (replacing power attack) is heavy weapons only - which includes two handed weapons, polearms, longbows, and heavy crossbows.

    D&D 5E (2024) Warlock -- initial analyses

This depends what you are trying to do. At least for me the Celestial Warlock is my go-to "I have no idea what everyone else is doing so I'm building a jack of all trades that can cover any role adequately while not being a spotlight hog" class. You can heal, you can scout, you can talk, and you...

    D&D 5E (2024) Warlock -- initial analyses

Light crossbow leaves you at d8+d6+2*Cha which leaves you an average of 3 points behind 2*(d10+Cha).

    D&D 5E (2024) Warlock -- initial analyses

True Strike in the hands of a Celestial Warlock does almost as much damage as Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast in the level 6-10 range - and you've saved an Invocation for ... whatever. And there is one reason to use other cantrips over Fire Bolt - you're in melee and don't want Disadvantage.

I don't see widening the spell selection when you can just use the pact library ticket to get a tome with two different rituals.

    D&D General Warlock vs Sorcerer

Sorcerers are as specialist as any casting class gets. If I were looking for a generalist warlock would be on the short list with bard, druid, and ranger.

    D&D General Warlock vs Sorcerer

Where "access to" is a very theoretical measure. Any given Divine Soul Sorcerer only knows two spells more than a warlock of the same level and doesn't have the invocations or pool of holy light. Divine Soul sounds good until you try to build one.

    D&D 5E (2024) Warlock -- initial analyses

To me the big thing about the True Strike path is that you can even afford to save the Agonizing Blast invocation. And sure 1d6+1d8+10 or about 18 damage isn't great, it's not awful either and a long way ahead of the full casters and their cantrips. And some of those invocations are awesome.

D&D General What is the right amount of Classes for Dungeons and Dragons?

Not even close. A good classless system will still have polarising features due to imbalances. You'll end up with something where you have a range like a 5.24 warlock (anything from a bookish psychic illusionist to a bullying Gish with a demon patron to a crossbow wielding priest with a holy...

    D&D 5E (2024) So Class Complexity...

I find the warlock more complex to build - but easy in play. You just have two spells slots and no need to worry about spell levels. Just the spells you have. And the Invocations are things you can Just Do. Either actives or passives. Most invocations are either very simple or just "You can...

D&D 5E (2024) The Multiverse in the 2024 Players Handbook

It claims to be but really really isn't. The magic is far too specific for most settings, the martials are far too grounded for e.g. anime or Celtic myth, and the combat is far too consequence free for anything with more than sprayed on grit.

D&D General Will you play the Revised 2024 rules?

We'll use 2024 rules as default next time I run a campaign of something 5eish. I don't always run D&D and when I do it's not always 5e

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

In reality that was the core change - putting it into the description of the monster. In 3.5 immunities were extremely common and were frequently by monster category. So constructs were blanket immune to critical hits and precision damage because whoever wrote them was thinking of golems...

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

There are quite a few more round subclass names; they've largely given up each class having a unique subclass name and tweaked the names for a few of them. One that comes to mind is that dragon blood is now I think Draconic - certainly something that doesn't really strongly imply an ancestor did...

D&D 5E (2024) Why is Ritual Caster gated?

Just thought I'd add a couple of clarifications because I agree it's a pain. A number of level 1 spells that are rituals. You can't e.g. grab water breathing. These spells count as always prepared. This ritual isn't level capped. If you also have e.g. Water Breathing prepared you can cast it...

D&D 5E (2024) Motley Fool Prediction: New Dungeons & Dragons Edition Won't Help Hasbro Much

Doubling the sales of D&D's best yearwould still leave it at a fraction of M:tG and that's within the WotC division of Hasbro.

D&D 5E (2024) Are single class martials still going to be viable in 2024?

Going back to basics single classed martials are much stronger than in 2014. Also levels 3-5 are all very important (3=subclass, 4 = first feat and prime stat for a normal character up from 17 to 18, 5 = second attack). The case for multiclassing before 5 is hard. After 5 things are very...

D&D 5E (2024) Best one level dip for a bladelock

The Pact of the Blade Warlock is mostly good other than being very squishy. And while 12 temp hp at will is great at tier 1 it falls off, so after level 5 I think the Bladelocks want a single level dip for medium armour and shields. Paladin, ranger, and fighter all provide medium armour...

D&D 5E (2024) The Sorcerer 2024 is the strongest class.

Nope. Wizard is the ritual master (you don't even have to have spells prepared to cast them as rituals) and has a broader range of spells available than a sorcerer. The sorcerer is the stronger combat class - but wizards still have more utility. If you're going to have two classes that are so...
