Mark me down as a data point against your Hypothesis. I started with 1e and the basic set. I moved forward to every edition TSR/WotC offered prior to 4th. Prior to 4th, each edition seemed like a new edition. 4e, to me, seemed like a different game.

Don't like point buy and I particularly don't like Pathfinder's point buy. It lets you buy stats below 8, which lets you make even more hyper-optimized min-maxed charactes. My preferred method these days is card gen, described here...

My experience with this is that some players grok it fairly quickly and do it frequently (perhaps too frequently...), and others just can't wrap their head around the concept. Fortunately for me, the group I ran in my Sunday Rocket Corps game seemed to be substantially the former type.

No problem; I did make an assumption that being based on Inception, that was what I should expect with regard to maturity level.
