    Monsters

Hmm, what was that quote... When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been and there you will always long to return.

Elephant in the room: rogue and fighter dailies.

Agree with that, which is a reason to try and gain advantage as early as possible as well, maybe with help from a wizard who knocks the target prone with Grease, which incidentally makes for good team play. Don't necessarily agree with that. You either use the extra action to try and take it...

    Run It

Nice chorus line... Should I just take my feedback and bury it in the backyard then? I don't want to pollute anyone else's D&D. One of the playtest experiences I read here, said that the DM hand waved a dead cleric to life at full hit points. Does this invalidate the entire experience? Does it...

Elephant in the room: rogue and fighter dailies.

Here is what I think, 4e had it right. Unless you have encounter powers, these daily resources are going to get used up in the first fight (because players don't have anything more interesting to do), and then they are going to want an extended rest, resulting in the 5 minute adventuring day...

    Run It

I'm being a bit of a devil's advocate here, don't get me wrong, I'm all for seeing how things work at the table. But my definition of "properly" may not be the same as yours or Kamikaze Midget's. There just isn't "one right way" to play D&D.

    Run It

I don't know if I can run Caves of Chaos as is. I don't understand it. It doesn't jive with any version of D&D I've ever played and enjoyed. And I get bored silly playing dungeon delves. If I'm going to do any playtesting, it will be using an actual adventure, that I or another DM writes, in a...

Can some one explain the Fighter's damage

I also have a theory on the +2 damage that is unspoken for. The fighter is adding his constitution to his damage. This could be one of those customization options we're not seeing. Perhaps this build gets +1 attack, +Con damage at level 1, twice per day Fighter's Surge at level 2. A different...

    Long Rest Poll

I clicked too fast on I like it... I actually don't care. I'll probably change rest mechanics to fit my needs anyway. I don't even have a problem with short rests allowing all hit points to be recovered. I feel hit points are a poor representation of wear and tear. I would like to come up with...

The 88 Hit Point Ogre in the Room

The Fighter is going to deal about a sixth of the ogre's hit points in one hit at level 3. With advantage from, let's say a wizard, he has an excellent chance to hit, and with Fighter's Surge, can get two hits in, with a Cleric's Battle Psalm, you might be looking at about 36 points of damage in...

    Compiled possible character sheet errors?

Actually his Dex is 15, so quarterstaff should be +4, 1d8+2. It could just be that floating unknown +2 fighter damage.

    First Impressions?

First overall impression, this looks better than the playtest at DDXP. So, it's good to see there is progress. First eye popping impression, holy smokes, everyone needs a cleric of Pelor in their group. First impression on spell layout... I don't like it. I want the crunchy bits to stand out...

    Magic Item Talk

Sense of wonder is in the hands of the DM, not the DMG. I want total customization with a guideline and examples for balance. If we must give homage to nostalgia, it would be fine to see items like Flametongue and Holy Avenger as examples of what could be made, but I don't want to see them as...

I don't like Dragonborn: Please come and bring friends.

I don't care much one way or the other. I like dragonborn, and can create dragonborn easily enough once I see other races. All I need is average race, big burly race, fast agile race, small sneaky race, stout race, mentally adept race. Give me those, and I don't care about the rest, I'll figure...

    Skills... WoTC Blog Post

This is stuff we do every day in every edition. You're czar, you have a palace and servants. You are an alchemist, you own a potion shop, and have an assistant. You are a pterodactyl trainer, you have a pterodactyl farm. Work out the details with your DM. No edition of D&D (or any other RPG)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Middle-earth Hobbits and D&D Halflings in 5e

I think 4e rules captured classic Halflings pretty well, barring imagery. In Touch with Nature; Close Friendship with the Earth - not directly, but feats like Riverborn Ritualist certainly can support this. Skilled in Crafts and Tools - nothing Quick of Hearing/Sharp-eyed/Keen-eyed - not...

    What Makes a Good DM?

This is interesting. Of four DM's in one of my groups, one is a master Actor, one is a master World Creator, one is a master Writer, and one is a master Tactician. I think all 4 DM's run enjoyable games. I don't really want to say any one area needs anything more than a modicum of competency...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Art Column Discussion: May

The second one looks more modern, sleek, and visually appealing to me. I'm trying not to let the color/texture choices influence me, but they do. I like the sheen on the feathers in the second one. I like the general contrast and sharpness. Having said that, the first one is perfectly...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you want the books for D&Dnext to be like?

Inspiring fresh artwork. That's all I care about. I hopefully won't be using the ancient page/index technology for anything, or worrying about the binding, as the book is likely to just gather dust on my shelf after the first 3-6 months.

Beyond the encounter: rules for pacing and downtime.

I am not sure I've ever had an issue with players stopping for a rest after one fight in 4e. As a matter of fact, they've gone on to do 6-7 encounters in a day. There seem to be a following here, that the length of the adventuring day is determined by the PC's. I disagree. It is determined by...

    D&D 5E (2014) A thought/question for DMs about 5e...

Don't care how much of the world is created by DM or players. Largely player dependent I suppose. In one of our games, players are more of the observer kind, so DM is creating almost 100% of it. In another game, through backgrounds we came up with we've had a good 10-20% influence on the world...
