How to do a doomed, "Halo Reach" type game?

IMX, heroes don't mind dying meaningful (campaign affecting) deaths that actually make for memorable experiences. Its the pointless deaths against some minor foe or trap that grate a player. As long as the goal was worthwhile, the foe important, and battle epic, there is meaning in the...

How "deep" into a setting will you buy?

I'll get as much as I can get my hands on. For 1e, 2e, and 3e, that was a lot, the vast majority. Pretty much everything that appeared in the FLGS, except Jakandor and Planescape (budgetary constraints at the time forced tough decisions). Living on the outskirts of civilisation, I notice there...

Can I host a COMPLETE druid spell list?

The spell stats are not a problem, as long as you don't have the full spell description.

Older Editions and "Balance" when compared to 3.5

Apparently the most dangerous clothing to wear, is non-armour, because you are then automatically a wizard, and doomed to be designated primary target by all manner of creatures. Survival tips for wizards: #1 Wear heavy armour (borrow the fighter's gear) #2 Get in the front line and stay...

Older Editions and "Balance" when compared to 3.5

Seriously? Does every commoner wander the world dressed in armour? the outlying farmer, taking his goods to market, dresses up in chain mail, and straps on a bastard sword, in case he gets waylaid by a band of nomadic bandits? The Noble, delivering a diplomatic message? The caravan merchant...

Funniest thing a players character ever did?

Underground, the Party in pursuit of a drow war party numbering hundreds. Mission calls for extreme subterfuge, and roguish skills. Enters a humunguous cave, numerous echoes all around. Elvish darkvision not good enough to see across the width of the cavernous emptiness. "hmmmm.... I whip out...

Older Editions and "Balance" when compared to 3.5

True, within reason... Once a DM had a skeleton rush past two fighters, (provoking AoO from each) to attack my wizard, which had been hanging back in the background. Sunless Citadel apparently had skeletons that were vicious members of the anti-spellcaster league. IOW, if the DM sucks, the DM...

Has anyone made good bar fight encounters?

Sure, some of the patrons are low life humans with not a level to their classless mono-existance. All takes is one NPC of decent level to create a more insteresting scene. Doesn't Trevidor the Terrible deserve a relaxing drink with his favourite wench after a hard week's pillaging and plunder...

Older Editions and "Balance" when compared to 3.5

Actually, it is possible to deal with traps as skill challenges in any edition of the game, just because it wasn't done so by many, does not mean the earlier editions of the game cannot do the same.

This is an RPG, not a "to do" list.

Right Doug. But it is also possible to tell the DM before the session about things you would like your character to do, or be involved in. I get kind of bored with players that just turn up, and expect a great adventure plot to fall on top of them, and be spoon-fed everything, every step of...

Settings and stories the rules can't handle (or don't handle well)

Of course it can be done. It doesn't take a huge leap of the imagination to put something together.

Older Editions and "Balance" when compared to 3.5

People get hung up on discussions of "balance", and lose sight of what is important. Fun. Because alot of what is discussed in forums about "balance" really is very minor details indeed. The level of balance sought in these forums at times borders on the inane. If a party can consist 5th -...

Older Editions and "Balance" when compared to 3.5

Bah! Discussions about "Balance".... The only thing important in a game is, if the participants are having fun. Which is basically provided by the DM. Whether the characters are "balanced" or not is completely irrelevant. The characters could be balanced out the wazoo, and the game be boring...

Rejiggering armour for a late darkage tech level. (2nd ed)

I really dig this kind of flavour, I have done a similar thing with my campaign, except basing the human technology level on that of the Roman empire (with fantastical elements of course). Well done!

Metaplots - it wasn't just TSR that did them

Manufacturor Metaplots, are best handled in the background, and without major changes affecting large portions of the campaign world. It should be up to the GM, to make any specific changes, as to whether the rumours of a revolution/earthquake/war/ are true or exaggerated. Done well, it...

Wet woman on a trireme, of course. Looks like those sailors need to be put in order! Keelhauling has been outlawed for months now!

    DnD/D20 Necessary Wizard Spells?

It depends on the other (non-spell) options you want to have available for your wizards. What kind of feats do you them to be able to take / which feats should be attractive? For instance, with fewer elemental spells of each level, any elemental affecting feat / abilities will be less attractive.

    D&D 3.x 3.5- Multiple shots with a bow?

Archery got gimped with the non-stacking of Bow & Arrows enhancements. Just a favourite pet peeve of mine with 3.5.
