What are you reading in 2023?

Speaking of Gibson, I’m finally getting around to reading the Jackpot books. Finished The Peripheral, just started Agency. Despite the languid pace of the first half of the book (two thirds?), I think The Peripheral is the best book he’s written in ages. Fantastic stuff.

    [Podcast] Worlds Beyond Number

The guy created a memorable personality for the Identify spell in Fantasy High. I both admire and despise him!

    Picard Season 3

Let me try and sum up my reaction to Picard season in a sentence or two. Terry Matalas and his crew took the least interesting premise and proceeded to knock it out of the park. Possibly over the state line. Bring on Legacy! (as a series, not as movies)

Star Trek: Section 31 ... THE MOVIE

There's a new trailer out today. Looks great. I feel like they knew what works about the show from the very start. Unlike, for instance, DISCO.

Star Trek: Section 31 ... THE MOVIE

I wonder that, too. He gave us both Pushing Daisies and Hannibal. Could go either way. :) (loved both)

Star Trek: Section 31 ... THE MOVIE

Discovery has persistent... let's say issues with its dramaturgy, but seasons 3 and 4 are a pure and clear contemporary restatement of the Star Trek ethos. Especially season 4, which resolves a Federation-threatening, err, threat with an act of interspecies communication rendered as spectacle.

Star Trek: Section 31 ... THE MOVIE

I like to think it was the events of Discovery season 2 that led to Section 31 being edited out of Starfleet's official history over the next 80 or so years. Then again, I like it when the Federation does things that a real political entity would so. It tethers the utopianism.

Star Trek: Section 31 ... THE MOVIE

How so? They're the bad guys who don't know it.

Star Trek: Section 31 ... THE MOVIE

I appreciated the fact Section 31, while still operating openly as Starfleet's intelligence branch, almost ushered in the AI apocalypse. It was very on-brand.

Video Games: Nostalgia Vs Extinct Genres

Master of Orion. The original, not 2. I find the greater level of abstraction works better for an interstellar 4X. Agree that Alpha Centauri is the apex of Civ-style games and long live Lady Diedre Skye and her aforementioned mind-worm swarms. Anyone know the easiest way to get SMAC running on...

    Picard Season 3

Your specific questions? Yes. :) But if you’re looking for quality science fiction shows to potentially hate-watch, have you tried Severance (Apple) or Station Eleven (HBO)? They’re some of the best television out there.

And Lee Pace. Captain Marvel was fine, but the new one has Kamala Khan in it so therefore I am excited!

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

Ahem… Season 3 is very good Season 1 is (nearly) great Season 2 is... 2 out of 3 ain’t bad

    Ahsoka trailer

It's nice to see Star Wars as laser-sword filled space opera again. Not that I'm dissing Star Wars as a critique of authoritarian bureaucracy from a Marxist perspective. That was amazing.

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

My reactions to this are, in order: It's an elegant solution that sidesteps the need for balancing mix-and-match traits between dozens of playable humanoids, I don't particularly like it, wait... it's essentially Mr. Spock (a Vulcan/human mix with the mechanics based one parent). If it's like...

TV show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Starts Production in 2024

Oddly, setting it in the 32nd century makes me much more interested in an Academy show. The far-future Federation is still in the process of rebuilding. It’s an exciting time. Plus, you get Tilly, Vance, and Kovich whenever you need them.
