TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

I have to admire how hard nuTSR is working to ensure they do not have a salable product.

The Orville vs ST: Brave New Worlds (Poll)

Welcome to Babylon 5 vs. Deep Space 9: The Next Generation! It’s really close. Closer than I would have expected. The writing on The Orville really feels like its source, 90s Trek. But is there a season of TNG that opened with 3 episodes as strong as New Horizons (haven’t seen this weeks yet)...

    Ms Marvel (spoilers)

Amir and Tyesha’s wedding approached Sense8 levels of pure joy at being human & alive. Bonus points for not scoring the scene to Four Non Blondes! (full disclosure: I like that Four Non Blondes song)

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

I found the writing sample evocative, in that it evoked the following response from my brain: “The author was pilloried by his own lack of talent.” Maybe I should write for the new Star Frontiers? I can spell ‘Dralasite’ and ‘Vrusk’ - not that nuTSR has the rights to use them. I’m not a...

What are you reading in 2022?

I polished off Scalzi’s The Kaiju Preservation Society in 3 days. Charming fluff. I figure I’ll blow through a few more books with named swords or spaceships before I have another go at (a long book by) Nabokov again.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

You totally get razzed by your peers if you don’t engage your ship‘s auto-destruct at least once. You know, this episode didn‘t feel like an adventure story or an action movie, which is kinda implicit in the premise “space pirates”. It felt like a screwball comedy. In space. With pirates. And a...

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

Probably not. But there are in the 21st century, where the audience is. It's called 'taking cover'. They have this thing called 'subspace radio'. Its signal propagates at around 52,000c. Chapel tried to access the ship's comms but was locked out. To a meeting at the edge of Federation space...

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

Wow I didn’t get it until I saw written down.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

Was not expecting the latest episode of SNW to namecheck both Maggie Nelson and Sybok. Color me surprised. So far they’re 7 for 7. Loved how Pike fizbinned the pirate crew and the bittersweet Gilbert and Sullivan scene where Spock and Chapel kissed.

    Obi-Wan Kenobi (spoilers)

I kinda want a Reva series now. I thought this last episode was great. Really put the opera in space opera (where ‘opera” = Wagner).

    Tom Swift on CW

    Ok that sounds better.

    Tom Swift on CW

On general principle I am obligated to be interested in a show that turns Tom Swift, Jr into a cross between Tony Stark and Little Nas X. But I kinda forgot this was real. I've tuned out of the CW over the past few years. Maybe I'll watch the premiere? "Magic soap" doesn't sound like it's...

Critical Role "Exandria Unlimited: Calamity" Border Changes

I haven’t checked this out yet, but that Brennan guy just might be the best DM I’ve ever seen. I’m currently working my way through his Fantasy High campaign on YouTube.

    Raised by Wolves, RIP.

I haven't finished the second season, but I'm kinda sad to see it go. Whatever its mistakes were, it was bold and bat... ahem... imaginative. Would have watched more of the Space Gospel of Ridley Scott, New Revised Intergalactic Version.

What are you reading in 2022?

Well I tried to read Nabokov's Ada, or Ardor. I bounced off of it hard, which surprised me a little because when I read Lolita and Pale Fire I didn't find them difficult. Oh wait, I was decades younger! Never mind. I'll try again someday. I had no idea it technically qualifies as sci-fi (by...

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

The consequences for not torturing the child are more severe in the SNW episode than in the original short story, but it's the same basic thought experiment. But was the culture wrong for designing such a system in the first place? Were there other options that didn't require the sacrifice of a...

This was totally “The One Who Beamed Away From Omelas”.

    Obi-Wan Kenobi (spoilers)

The speeders look too much like A-wings to me. I had the same problem with them in Empire. They actually call them T-47s in the episode, but when they first appeared on screen I though they were star fighters that jumped in. A like of dialogue about flying below their scanners would have been...
