    Attacks per Round

In BECMI D&D we added Iterative attacks as an option for the player to use if they wanted to. You could make 2 attacks at 2 mastery levels lower, or 3 at 3 mastery levels lower, or 4 at 4 mastery levels lower. So a longsword Expert could do 2 attacks per round at Basic level skill, or take...

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

One thing I think may be neat to do with this "make up your skills" approach is what to do in Specific vs. General type skills. Taking a queue from Cartoon Action Hour, in the case of a tie, the more specific skill wins. So if someone with Melee ties with someone with Swords, Swords wins, and...

D&D 4E 5E as a Rewritten 4E with Flavor Bits from Other Editions?

I'm *almost* a bit suspicious that 4e was an attempted "New Coke" marketing ploy to make 5e (Coca Cola Classic) an enormous hit... Manufacture outrage over the "new & improved" product to resell the classic one with skyrocketing sales. At least it seems to be working out that way. As much...

D&D 5E (2014) So why are you buying 5th edition?

It seems to combine a lot of the things I like from BECMI, 2e, 3.x, and my own homebrew add-ons that I really liked, and makes the things about 4e that I didn't like, like skill challenges "die in a fire". So from BECMI, it is going back to a more basic style of game. I like that. Also...

    Constant Effect Spells

Just make the Hour/Level effects a ritual and have done with it. Also to keep things less broken, maybe a maximum # of rituals that can be "turned on" at any one time, based on level. So it ought to be a big deal when the PC gets their first (or second, etc) ritual.

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

Wow. It seems as if they read my mind, and used it to make all their design notes. After reading this, I imagine the last staff meeting went something like this:

A More Basic Design... why not bring back the Basic Setting? Mystara!

The Known World is Mystara. Mystara is the planet it is on. "The Known World" is just a small section of the continent of Brun and some islands from that same planet. Are you saying that you'd want it to only focus on the Known World (the gazeteer countries) and skip the other places on the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

I originally said "no" but put me in the "special" category. I like the way Barbarians of Lemuria handles it. After combat, if you aren't unconcsious, and have a few minutes to rest, you regain half your lost HP.

D&D 5E (2014) Which of these settings do you want to see for D&D Next?

Mystara; but I would want Hollow World and Savage Coast included in the setting book. If that stuff will fit in Poor Wizard's Almanac, it will fit in the setting book for the planet. While I'd prefer they keep "the Immortals" I'd accept it if they started calling them "Gods". I think this...

A More Basic Design... why not bring back the Basic Setting? Mystara!

There are cultural analogs in Forgotten Realms a-plenty, and they sell that setting by the pound. Kara-Tur, Matzica, and quite a few more. Why are those okay, but Mystara is not? Honestly, I don't get why fantasy has to equal Medieval Europe. To me that is offensive. I think it's refreshing...

A More Basic Design... why not bring back the Basic Setting? Mystara!

Okay so we know that they are looking to "turn back the clock" a bit on design complexity here, where simplicity will be the core with optional add-ons to add complexity. We also know that the "Caves of Chaos" (READ: Keep on the Borderlands) will be the introductory module. So maybe (I...

    Attacks of Opportunity

Make them an optional special ability that Fighters and some monsters can have.

D&D 5E (2014) My Boring but Pragmatic Predictions for D&D Next

This actually looks pretty logical. Hopefully they'll do some of this stuff.

    In Defense Of: +X items

I definitely agree that a magic sword should be better at hit & damage than a non-magic sword. I'd like to see + weapons remain; but only in a limited way. +1 for Adventurer, +2 for Paragon, and +3 for Epic tier weapons. Oh, and that first magic weapon you got? It's + levels when you do...

D&D 3.x How is this going to work? BECMI & 3.5 & 4e players all at once?

Quite obviously, they do mean it literally. If people want to continue to speculate otherwise, this thread is not for you. This thread is about speculating how they might be able to accomplish what Monte is talking about here. Let's say we have 2 friends playing a fighter. Fred is playing...

A Tale of Two (make that 3) Covers: Grand Finale

So from the last thread, I got the sense that this is what people wanted to see: (Call it Image A) But I also got a note, which I thought was a good idea, that I should move the + to tighten things, and came up with this: (Call it Image B) But that looked off-balance to me (the sword on...

A Tale of Two Covers: Part DEUX

Yes; I intended to have the same "sunburst" effect on the +, but I think I forgot to finish that step. Once it is fixed up, I'll post that up along with a few other previews.

    Should Epic Be In PH1?

So because only a few people like Epic, it must be mandatory, to ensure that it gets support? Call me crazy, but I think things that only appeal to a few people should be optional.

A Tale of Two Covers: Part DEUX

So I think it was pretty clear that the second cover was the winner last time, when I asked about a new cover for Honor + Intrigue (swashbuckling RPG based on the Barbarians of Lemuria system). I did refine it a bit since then. What do people think this time? Here is Cover #1 And here is...
