WHich is Better? Dire Wolf Mount or Beastmaster w/ Companion?

I want to play a ranger with a pet dire wolf, but I am not sure which option is better-- having a Dire Wolf Mount & the mounted combat feat, or having the Beastmaster build and taking a Wolf (or maybe Bear) companion, and saying it is a dire wolf. I intend to play a halfling (yes, sub-optimal...

Help! I am overwhelmed by choosing items! Suggestions for 8th level Dwarf w/ Shield

So, I have a character that I am planning to play in a few weeks at DunDraCon, and I need some help choosing what items to take. For instance, I don't know much about the special armor matierials, etc. I don't play regularly, and have not played beyond 3rd level before, so I would appreciate...

    Rogue CA and Thrown Dagger

This may sound dumb, but in 4e, magically, if an enemy is surrounded by guys with swords, he is somehow better able to pay attention to your thrown dagger than he is to the swords-- i.e. they all get flanking bonuses, and you get jack and squat. Even though common sense would dictate that a...

    Grading At-Will Powers

I think I just came up with a decent fix for Careful Attack and Sure Strike to at least upgrade them to Cs or Bs, without being unbalanced. +2 to hit, -2 to damage. Essentially it is an inverse power attack. Lets look at it now. You have 18 dex using a longbow. Normally you have +6 hit...

    Standing up while teleporting?

I think this is a perfect example of what folks mean when they say "4E =/= D&D". Back in the day of Basic D&D or AD&D, something like this would just be left up for the GM's interpretation-- "well since you can teleport 25 feet in any direction, sure, I suppose you can decide what direction you...

    The Videogame comparison

Well, I can offer anectdotal evidence too, about how many people I talked to about their first time playing 4e said it was like a videogame. But I don't think that would get us anywhere. We should probably just stop having these threads and resolve something like this: "Many 4e lovers will...

    The Videogame comparison

Well there are restrictions. There are 4 roles for starters, and a great lack of character customization. Want to make a halfling ranger? Sure go ahead, shoot yourself in the foot by not being an elf. That is one of the downsides to each race giving 2 stat boosts-- less "optimal" choices...

Quandary! Can I do a “Pirate” campaign with 4th Ed as it is?

Glad to see you liking the product. It is the version with the new cover (the blue armored man fighting a big bug in the corridor w/ a space battle outside?) As for the Brutal property-- essentially you reroll the dice if the roll too low. So Brutal 2 rerolls any result of 2 or less on the...

    Minotaur + Executioner's Axe = OMG!

And since Drow = most broken of all the MM races, the fact that they made it a regular playable race means that there is no reason not to do the same for all the rest. They are just going to spread it out, 1 or 2 per book to get people to buy more books, of course!

Quandary! Can I do a “Pirate” campaign with 4th Ed as it is?

Well my first advice would be to use another game system entirely, there are many that can do what you want far better than 4e D&D. However, if you must force a square peg-leg into a round hole, I would recommend that your party consist mostly of Rangers and Rogues. Rangers make good pirates...

Action Points for re-rolls: what breaks?

I think an elegant solution for those paragon paths would be that if you use a point to do a reroll, you get to do it with a bonus to the roll-- or you get to roll 2d20 and take the better result.

    Minotaur + Executioner's Axe = OMG!

The chance of rolling two ones on 2d6 is 1/36. The chance of rolling a 1-2 on a d12 is 1/6. You just make it six times less likely for the dice to explode, or in otherwords, probably reduced the fun by 5/6ths for the player who thought of the idea. I think letting people get away with a cool...

    Minotaur + Executioner's Axe = OMG!

Minotaurs (and bugbears) can use weapons a size larger than themselves. An executioner's axe does d12 damage, and is high crit and brutal 2. A Minotaur using one does 2d6 damage, +12 crit, and rerolls any 1 or 2s on each d6. So the minimum damage is 6 per hit. On a brute strike, the...

Careful Attack/Sure Strike: A mathematical analysis

Well that is one way to get people not to play rangers in your campaign.. mercilessly nerf any power that can be percieved as better than other poorly written ones. Unless you've nerfed all the other classes just as much. Did you make it so cleave has roll to hit the second target?

re: No 4E for Necromancer Games!

Yeah, it looks like the GSL has served the purpose of being 3rd party killware. Anyone who signs it as is, is painting themselves into a corner (can't make OGL products anymore and GSL can be suspended at anytime w/o notice AND if you go back to OGL, and wizards sues you-- you have to pay THEIR...

Ongoing effects & Delaying your Action

If a character has an ongoing effect, what is the impact of them delaying their action? Example: My warlord uses a power that gives another character +5 to hit until the end of MY next turn. But I am delaying my action for 3 rounds, and the PC in question gets +5 to hit until then. Example...
