Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

You think a de-SRD'd (gotta be a better way) Pathfinder is going to have "broad compatibility" with 5e and 1D&D? The fully SRD'd Pathfinder is more work to convert to 5e than I'm willing to put in. And there must be others like me, or Paizo wouldn't be publishing 5e books. Guess I'm skeptical.

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

Well, I think it's also a risk if you don't want your audience, and therefore your business, to dramatically shrink.

D&D 5E (2024) What happens if One DnD fails?

More than that -- it got huge when they were actively ignoring it for once.

Dang, tough crowd. He included the winky emoji and everything. :(

    Can WotC be forgiven?

Eh. They could build it the old fashioned way, like Amazon or Apple, and just do it better than everyone else. They're not exactly up against a Walmart or Android, either.

Fair. You could well be right on all counts.

Again, then say "we can't comment because we're under an NDA." Don't say, "We've been waiting to hear from Wizards about these rumors."

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

If it's the latter, the "we've been waiting to hear something from WotC about these rumors" is a bit disingenuous. If the former...what does that mean? I think it means we may see a war.

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

So, the PR doesn't read as though Paizo has been involved in any discussions or negotiations with Wizards about this. What do we make of that?

Hello, I am lawyer with a PSA: almost everyone is wrong about the OGL and SRD. Clearing up confusion.

I'm so tempted to continue the metaphor to its logical conclusion, but instead I'll just let everyone be excited.

    The New Republic!

Wow! I'm old enough that this is more shocking to me than all the gazillion subscriber YouTube channels. https://newrepublic.com/article/169978/dungeons-dragons-intellectual-property-greed

Hello, I am lawyer with a PSA: almost everyone is wrong about the OGL and SRD. Clearing up confusion.

Yeah, I was being more than a little facetious. I do wish a real "replacement SRD" would emerge, but I think it's a real longshot for a lot of reasons.

Are these other publishers going to jump aboard and support a new Pathfinder SRD? That would be amazing!

    I think that's a near-perfect statement from Goodman Games.

    Imagining a post-OGL world

I think it will look like the late 90s. Except D&D will be never-could-have-imagined-it popular instead of on the verge of becoming an asset in a bankruptcy proceeding.

How long do we wait for WoTC to speak?

I agree that it's better to be able to plan your exit from the D&D ecosystem than it is to be booted with no warning. But at the end of the day, you're still out. I don't think that's a beneficial position for 3PP. That's why I'd like to see an explicitly irrevocable 1.0b, even if I'm not hopeful.

How long do we wait for WoTC to speak?

In my opinion, shared with Ryan Dancey, Pathfinder succeeded because it was more "D&D" than 4e was (to enough people to split the market, at least). As soon as that was no longer the case (5e), D&D claimed the lion's share of those customers back. Ryan called 4e the "fantasy heartbreaker." From...
