D&D General I wish people would avoid name-dropping Gary Gygax

He’s not “just someone listed in the credits,” no, but he’s also not the sole creative contributor. The reality is much more nuanced.

D&D General I wish people would avoid name-dropping Gary Gygax

The OP isn’t saying Gary Gygax’s name shouldn’t be used at all when referring to 1e. It says his name shouldn’t be invoked when referring to an edition. This is maybe not the clearest phrasing, but what it’s actually saying is not to treat his name as synonymous with any edition. Just because...

    D&D 5E (2024) The 7 5.5e FRPG Subclasses Survived

Those were in the horror subclasses UA. This thread is talking about the 7 subclasses from the Forgotten Realms subclasses UA. The one with the moon bard, knowledge cleric, purple dragon knight fighter, oath of noble genies paladin, winter walker ranger, scion of the three rogue, spellfire...

Unearthed Arcana UA Phantom Rogue still seems BORING and feels OUTDATED in 5e2024. It's basically a vanilla Rogue before 9.

Welcome to rogue subclasses. They all basically don’t exist until 9th level. We had the opportunity to fix this problem in the 2024 rules by universalizing subclass level progression, but the backwards compatibility police killed that chance.

They’d use it a lot more if it gave the target an HP back and did some damage to enemies around the target

D&D General How much does Shattered Obelisk need Phandelver?

As much as any adventure requires the players to have a bond with the local community. Such a bond can help players get invested in the adventure, because it can provide a motivation to get involved. If your players are more the sort to engage in whatever plot falls in front of them because it’s...

D&D General How much does Shattered Obelisk need Phandelver?

Other than it being by far the strongest part of the module, I don’t think you actually need Lost Mine at all to run the rest of Shattered Obelisk. Lost Mine introduces Phandalin and the local NPCs, which is helpful, but not required, and your players might well remember those characters from...

    D&D 5E (2024) I attack the darkness!

Thinking about this very common house rule regarding blindness, that the disadvantage from it can’t be cancelled out by advantage makes me think there’s potential in that as a piece of design tech. “You have disadvantage on X and can’t gain advantage on X” as a sort of more powerful version of...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sage Advice Compendium Updated To 2024

In all of the posts of mine that you’ve responded to I’ve said the same thing about it saying the DM determines when circumstances are appropriate for hiding, but then goes on to give what appears to be more rigidly-defined rules for how to make that determination, which are incomplete.

    D&D 5E (2014) Arcane Recovery strategy

It depends on my prepared spells, and also what has happened in the adventure so far, as that could give me an indication of what to expect next.

    D&D 5E (2024) Sage Advice Compendium Updated To 2024

Yes, but then it goes on to give what appear to be very specific rigidly-defined rules for determining exactly that, but are incomplete. Among other things, the rules that it goes on to give seem to imply that a creature “finding you” is a specific thing these rules care about, and it notably...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sage Advice Compendium Updated To 2024

I mean, you presented Shadowdark Wish to me as a counter-example to me saying that if the intent is for the 2024 Stealth rules to be handled by the DM they should say so clearly and explicitly. In that context, the subject of explicitness is the expectations placed on the DM. I would say...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sage Advice Compendium Updated To 2024

No, the effects of that version of the Wish spell aren’t stated directly, but that’s ok, because the fact that the DM determines the effects is stated directly. Again, I am not asking that the specific conditions under which one can or cannot hide necessarily be rigidly defined. I am asking that...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sage Advice Compendium Updated To 2024

We’re going to have a hard time communicating if we’re not using the same definitions. This isn’t what I meant when I said explicit. What you’re using explicit to mean is closer to how I’m using the phrase “rigidly defined.” I’m using explicit in its literal English meaning - stated directly, as...
