While I agree that lying is a chaotic, not evil act, detect chaos would not help. Single actions generally don't change alignment. Furthermore, if you did detect as chaotic, you might still be telling the truth, but had recently started a peasant revolt or are simply a wacky kind of guy.

Of course, the rulebooks have the advantage of not just being official, but also the primary source, including a "Primary Source" rule which specifically states it as trumping all other sources, including the FAQ.

I would imagine that unless it's mandated by the DM, no one would take an NPC class for either side of the gestalt.

Being that this is the DM doing it, I'd say he's well within his rights. He could have made up an entirely new spell that does this, or used the other spell already printed. Heck, he could have had a high level Mystic Theurge ally cast it on him. He could also handwave it away. The question...

+2 is the general feeling about it. Make CERTAIN you enforce the "only one PrC at a time" and "no multiclass PrC*" rules, esspecially if you plan to mix gestalt with non-gestalt. *Multiclass PrCs being things like Mystic Theurge, Arcane Trickster, and the like.

Note that if you use U_K's ECL calculator to objectively determine how powerful it it (sans roleplaying restrictions and prereqs), it comes out to a +10 LA template. Of course, no one would take a +10 LA template, but the same calculator has a recommendation that seems to work out pretty well...
