to threat or not to threat?

weird situation came up last night: PC, through spell use, good defence items and total defence, managed to get his AC up to 30 during a battle. the enemy mook only had an attack bonus of +5, so he'd only ever hit on a natural 20. however, he was using a falchion and managed to roll an 18 - a...

    Allowing flaws midway

i've actually quite a lot of experience using flaws in my campaigns and we've decided to houserule some of their effects, but your mileage may vary: when chosing a flaw, the player chooses 3 and the DM picks the one that has the 'best fit' to the PC involved - a wizard taking 'noncombatant'...

What to do with 1st level orc barbarians

crit happens. that is completely and extremely awesome and i think i'm going to steal that from ye!

What to do with 1st level orc barbarians

this is also equally valid, but i was under the impression that it would've been a standard four person party against the lone barbarian. either way, the barbarian's damage is high enough in either case to pose a serious threat. i've usually tried to keep them off screen, or detectable with well...

What to do with 1st level orc barbarians

given, it's deadly, but in the same vein, a competent ranger, rogue, or scout will probably be dealing out over 10 damage per shot - something that, given the right circumstances, will drop the raging orc. if the orc's nearby, he's got the melee advantage; if he's far away, he'll be a...

    Ki

i believe that some maneuvres of the sublime way from the tome of battle is powered by the character's ki, although, i'm none too sure on that. kinda just recall reading it somewhere in the book.

is a cone of cold three dimensional?

well, all joking asides, i was wondering the exact dimensions. i know a cone leaves whichever corner the caster desires, but since this now coorelates to a third dimension, he'd also have to pick an angle for it to exist upon? for instance if i angled it down, it'd merely broadcast the cold in...

    'close wounds' & death.

THIS! that is what i was missing! many many thanks! now it makes *perfect sense* - it's a little 'pick me up' when the cards are down, but it's probably not going to save you from swimming through a magma pool on the sun. :)

is a cone of cold three dimensional?

simply put, a PC rogue was hiding in a tree and an ally - in the confusion of battle - cast a cone of cold against some nearby enemies. technically, the rogue was within the cone, except he was some 15' up. am i to assume that the cone is a 90 degree wedge, 70 feet long, but also 70 feet high...

    'close wounds' & death.

the spell close wounds is completely awesome, especially since it's an immediate action - it really allows our group's cleric to ensure that none of us go down, especially during the really hectic battles. however, we're kind of confused about the wording of the spell. it heals 1d4+level as an...

A Complete Adventurer Ninja in an Undersea Court

perhaps a little reward item given out by her clan to those that are loyal (thus reflecting her real-world committment to your game?) maybe a little trinket that has her clan symbol, and as long as she has any ki remaining in her ki pool, she can 'take 10' on any swim check, thus reinforcing...

    hexblade 2 worth it?

I currently run a character that is a Hexblade 2 / Warblade 6 and was wondering if I should just ask the DM to retrain the first two levels into Warblade. While the extra level of maneuvers would be nice, we used a fairly low-powered stat generation; ironically, i ended up with three 14's two...

    limits on leadership?

oh, sorry, i meant "would you let everyone in a group of four take the feat individually, ie: 4 PCs and their 4 cohorts?"

    limits on leadership?

fascinating stuff guys - very informative! also, currently, we play 'followers' as a throwback to our 2e days: you don't get 'em, unless you've established a base of power somewhere. this, we argue, is what attracts them to you, and even then, they're your 'in town' representation, and are...

    limits on leadership?

would you, as a DM limit the number of times that a group could take the 'leadership' feat? i currently game a group of 4, and two have already taken it. the other two are one level behind the others due to death and i'm wondering if they may also take it - would you limit this manner of thing...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Soulknife - Does it need a power point reserve?

having no authority whatsoever, i'd probably vote with this answer, and say that it wasn't needed for the class to function, and was merely junk-DNA, or left in for flavour, so they could score psionic feats or something.

am i the jerk or is my friend?

pretext - he claims he's discovered a supercool way to get something like +18 or better natural armour from a form of alter self. i obviously don't know what this is, and he won't tell me. annoying, but oh well. current - i DM a game he's in and he naturally explained that his 5th level wizard...

    Falling Damage and Stoneskin

hmm. the rules lawyer in me wants to claim that it wouldn't protect from a floor, since the text does say "...It ignores the first 10 points of damage each time it takes damage from a weapon..."; so, maybe it only 'activates' when someone is struck from a weapon? ie: the spell-matrix-whatever...

    Roofwalker and Boots of Landing

this is true, and what i get for posting tired and ill-informed. however, isn't the CL on a ring of featherfalling a lowly 1? doesn't that mean that it'd only last a single round? am i not seeing something here?

    Roofwalker and Boots of Landing

without knowing the finer points of both bonuses, i'd probably opt to just take the better effect of the two, as rampant stacking is what lead previous versions of this game off the rails.
