D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

Quod licet Iovi, non licet bovi is proverb that nicely encapsulates hypocrisy of those with power.

Captain Planet was awesome. Green mullet for the win :D I liked that show as a kid. Linka was my girl. We had around same time cartoon with similar environmentalist theme, called "Little flying bears" ( croatian-canadian co production).

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

If hopepunk is answer to grimdark, isn't grimpunk answer to classic fantasy with black and white morality with Big Damn Heroes? One of the things that makes DS unique is that Athas itself is enemy to the players. Scarce resources, scorching heat. Even if you want to be BDH, world itself is...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

Well, idk how big that area would be in real life, but we can use Kuwait as an example. It's small desert country, with longest border to border distances of 170 and 200 km, with 9 cities over 50k (4 over 100k) people. You can cram a lot of it in tight spaces when it's few cities and desert in...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

@PHATsakk43 Problem with some of cultural norms is that they are clearly against law. Biggest problem with their culture is underage marriage. By law, people under the age of 16 can't be married. Age of consent is 15. Yet, in Romani population, there are still very common marriages where...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

Glad you mentioned Roma people. Boy, this will be long one. I grew up in neighborhood with significant Roma population. I speak some language (not Romani Chib, Roma in Croatia speak different language, form of archaic Romanian, called bajaški). They, among themselves, are not unified, they are...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

I love Dark Sun. After Ravenloft, my favourite official setting. One of the reasons i like it it's cause it so much different than other settings. Like someone said, practically game of it's own with 2ed d&d base mechanics. And if it were ever updated, i would buy it in a heartbeat. Not for...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

First off, i would like to thank two people who linked Book of Vile Darkness pdf on DTRPG. It seams that their search filters out mature content if you are not signed in and have mature filter off. Thx people. I liked BoVD as a product. It was first official product designed around evil with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Lacking Motivation/Inspiration

I would suggest talking to players. Get their input. Ask them what are they interested in doing, where do they wanna go, what are short term goals of their characters etc. That can give you some inspiration and also direction in which way to steer things.

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

On the other hand, TSR didn't have benefit of modern print on demand and digital distribution channels. While there still is cost in making new version Dark Sun, with digital only product, you cut out huge chunk of cost that's associated with physical products. Question is, even with digital...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

@Cergorach I know you can't please everyone and there will always be someone who complains. Maybe i wasn't precise in wording, so scratch that everybody. It should try to be as inclusive and non offensive it can be and still be appealing to broadest audience possible. In the end, you can't win...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

@Hussar To be fair, product like Book of Vile Darkness (official wotc product for 3.5), can't be sold at DMsGuild cause of it's content clashes with their content guideline policy. I also can't find that particular book in any of pdf stores for legal purchase. Yes, today we live in abundance...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

Heard that one before. In principle, i agree. Problem is, what is evil and good falls under morality and ethics and those are subjective. We were talking about public spaces. Not our home games. When it comes to home games, i don't tolerate that kind of behavior towards fellow players at the...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

If you feel you have moral imperative to call it out, you do you. I applaud you for activism. I'm to cynical for that. My idealism died long time ago. Yes. While laws of the land apply to what's said in online spaces, those spaces also have Terms of service and Rules of conduct. You can say...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

I would argue that social media spaces aren't public places. They are private places open to public. There is difference in those two. Rules are different. On social media, owners are the one who sets what is ok and what isn't. In public spaces, laws and public regulations dictate what is ok and...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

I'm just saying that is hard to ban people from the hobby when most people engage with hobby in private setting. In those instances, only thing one can do is not to engage with people one doesn't like. I agree, it's easier in convention or organised setting, but, as i said, that's not really a...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

First and foremost, i'm not from USA, but from small EU country. I also lived in Germany (Munich),Austria (Vienna) and Italy (Milano). From personal experience, organised play just isn't big thing here. Even in game stores, people who do play, are mostly already formed friend/acquaintance groups...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

It's legible enough. :D Morality is subject of a debate i won't touch with 11 foot pole. Personally, i'm live and let die person. But out of curiosity, how can you remove someone from hobby? Sure, you can ban someone from convention. But- they can organize their own. You can ban them from your...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

It's 100 pages. Sorry, but don't have time to slog trough all of it. I was asking genuine question about levels at which sexism is present. If we are talking about individual tables- sure. It's there. No point denying it. But, there isn't much you can do about it except not play with those...
