    Favorite Gaming Moments of 2024

We managed to play on almost weekly basis from early January to mid July. That kind of consistency of play wasn't achieved by my group since 2019.

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

Depends on the context. Are we talking about individual game tables, convention attendees, company reps at conventions or products themselves?

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

Difference between Mattel and TSR is night and day. Mattel was publicly traded company since early 60's. TSR was, even at it's peak, smallish company. Mattel was also run by people that cared about making money. TSR, well, not so much. They made so much stupid business mistakes, it's pure luck...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I don't have particular number in mind. PC death happens as a mix of bad luck (on the players side), very good luck on DMs side, poor player decisions ( Leroooy Jenkins style will get you killed). I do have some house rules that make game more dangerous though.

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

RPG's, D&D specifically, grew out from miniature war gaming. Niche hobby dominated by men in 60's and 70s. They targeted same majority demographic that played miniature war games. Yes, they made educated guess at what would their prime consumer base would be and went all in. And, as i said...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

Let's ask ourself the big question. Who was primary and overwhelming majority of customers that bought these products? And what usually sells products among those demographics? Answer to that questions is one of the reasons why artwork back then was the way it was. To put it plain and simple...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

It was, is and always will be sexist, as long as there are people involved. Some people are just aholes, some just like to behave like ones in the games. While products can improve and are improving, there will always be tables with players/DMs that are naughty word. No helping there. Best thing you...

Grittiness and Lethality in Game Combat vs in Read-Only Fiction

I killed characters in abundance. But i give fair warning at session zero that my games are grim, gritty and more lethal than usual. But in most cases, if players are smart, they can avoid combat all together or sound tactical retreat (for that one, they do need to plan ahead, but there is...

Grittiness and Lethality in Game Combat vs in Read-Only Fiction

Combat where life or serious body harm is not on the line is- sport. At least for me. TTRPG-s are tools. Systems of various mechanics used to mostly resolve conflict in more or less unbiased way. You can use those rules to recreate fiction or you can use them to recreate worlds. FE as a DM i...

Grittiness and Lethality in Game Combat vs in Read-Only Fiction

Well, at least in any game i played that involves rolls to hit and damage in combat. Like i said, if they like that, good for them. :D (sidenote, i don't really like Soulsborne games). But in souls games, you die. A lot. You just don't die permanently. It's not game over- load last save. You...

D&D General Folks Who Came Back With 5E: Did You Stay with 5E?

Well, i started with 3.5, when 4th came out, we stayed for some time, then switched to PF1. There was period of about 2 years where we ditched D&D and played only 7th sea, after that about year and a half of only WoD. When Next playtest came, we switched our relativley new 2ed ad&d campaign to...

Grittiness and Lethality in Game Combat vs in Read-Only Fiction

Sure you can. If you like it, go for it. One of the easiest ways to do it is to give players control if they even want to engage in a fight ( no ambushes) and give only opponents that are reasonable enough and don't have kill on sight mentality (for example, pack of hungry predator animals...

    "The Customer Is Always Right"

Cause people hate talking to machine and want to talk to living person. Even if you can't deviate from the script when it comes to problem solving, at least you know there is person on the other side. If other person is normal and you have some people skills, even if you can't solve problem, you...

Grittiness and Lethality in Game Combat vs in Read-Only Fiction

Yes, you could have rules like that. But then combat becomes trivial thing. You know your character can't die unless you choose to. But without risk of PC death, you can be more gung ho and trigger happy cause you know, no matter what, even if you lose combat, you live to fight another day. For...

    "The Customer Is Always Right"

Oh boy. Rant incoming. I worked in retail and as customer support agent for largest ISP/telecom in my country. I've done 6 month tour in Afghanistan. If i had to pick one, send me to sandbox, at least i can shoot back. During HS and some University years, i worked in largest retail chain in...

Which game does monster hunting well?

I would go with Hunter:The Vigil. Or just plain old WoD core rulebook (2004 White Wolf edition). We played long, Supernatural inspired campaign using it and it was blast. If you want hunters to be more normal people stuck hunting monsters, core WoD and Tier 3 Hunters are way to go ( regular...

Grittiness and Lethality in Game Combat vs in Read-Only Fiction

Unlike PCs in games, literary characters have special feature called- Plot Armor. It's hard to make series and sell sequel books if you kill of protagonists ( there are some exceptions, like ASOIF, but i would argue that there aren't any protagonists in it in classical sense). Also, in fiction...

What is it about TTRPGs for YOU?

First and foremost, it's hanging out in person with my friends. For those 3-4 hours, we unwind and act as kids again, playing the game, spewing cheesy one liners and bad puns. It recharges batteries. Also, it's therapeutic on some level to get away from being responsible grown adult and just...

    Aging and Gaming

I found out that somewhere along, i stopped caring about what goes on in ttrpg industry and hobby in broader sense, and talking to fellow gamers i know irl, most of them are same way. People have their regular groups, they have their favorite games, they play them, they enjoy them and that's...

D&D General Elon Musk Wants To Know 'How Much Is Hasbro?'

If he want's to buy it, and fork over ridiculous amounts of money, go Elon go. His Tesla shenanigans payed me enoguh for complete house renovation. Since i dropped few grand on Hasbro stock, if i get to sell them at 2x or 3x, i'll make toast to Elon with bottle of Pappy. As I said numerous...
