    Aging and Gaming

As a youngster in this thread ( i'm only 37) but i see some of the problems slowly creeping in. Also, i'm youngest in my regular group, rest of the guys are in their early to mid 40s. We joke around that if you combine 5 of us, you can't put together one fully healthy person. When i did my...

The older i get the less I need.

Most of my collection is in PDF on external ssd drive. These days, i hardly buy anything physical when it comes to ttrpgs. I do own some books, but they sit on the bookshelf and aren't used in games. It's faster to pull out phone and google rule than to find one in 300+ book. On the other...

    Best Horror Role Playing Game

WoD, CoC, 10 candles, for more survival horror- All flesh must be eaten. D&D in Ravenloft can be good if done right. From personal experience, how good horror is relies heavily on GMs skill.

    D&D 5E (2014) "Fixing" electrum pieces - looking for a player's perspective

From player perspective, in 5e, after levels 3-4, i stop counting gold pieces, let alone petty change ( silver and copper). Electrum is fun for games set in classical era (Greece/Rome). In standard fantasy, nah. Personally, can't remember any of us used silver coins for anything in game. In...

Trying to Describe "Narrative-Style Gameplay" to a Current Player in Real-World Terms

@innerdude Have you asked said player what it is in ttrpgs that he finds fun? For some people, getting their characters as powerful as they can is what makes it fun for them to play.

    Mundane utility to match magic

In a game like WoD, you spend character points or xp on everything. So if you invest points in magic, you don't have points for skills, stats, merits etc. So you end up with mage that is powerful magic wise, but can't drive car, fire a gun, doesn't have contacts or wealth etc. You need to...

D&D 5E (2014) What level is optimal to test homebrew classes?

While testing up to lv 17 has it's merits, then you may as well test it to full 20. But personally, i find it usually waste of time to even develop anything above level 10, cause most campaigns end in that 8-10 lv range. If OP regularly runs campaigns in teen levels, then it makes sense...

D&D 5E (2014) What level is optimal to test homebrew classes?

Test it at levels you mostly play. No point in testing for full 20 if you never play past level 10.

    D&D 5E (2024) Sword Coast population data from 2024 D&D Pocket Expert

Technicality (but, if they have spaceships in their port, you could say it's also - spaceport). Spaceships land outside city and sail in like regular ships. But point stands. They trade with fricking space. They have solid magitech, it just isn't so front and center like in Eberron, but it does...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sword Coast population data from 2024 D&D Pocket Expert

Setting with literal magic space ships is most definitely more advanced than early modern. So, 2 million people isn't that hard to believe. While FR doesn't have Eberron's steampunk magitech vibe, it does have that level of magitech available. Again, magic space ships. And Waterdeep has - spaceport.

Hasbro Hit With Layoffs, Wizards of the Coast Impacted

Layoffs suck, but they are part of life if you work in corporate sector. On my second job, they hired me in February and fired me in November of same year ( they cut off 20 people, 10% of total workers in that branch office, mostly us newbies). Come June next year, same company is hiring again...

Which fantasy TRPGs do you think truly reflect the characteristics of firearms as Game Changers?

World of Darkness is also full of magic and supernatural creatures. And still, not one of them wants to be at the receiving end of .50 BMG. To paraphrase Kincaid from Dresden files, when asked how would he take out wizard. High powered sniper rifle from mile away. That's why regular joe hunter...

D&D General It's Magic, You Know

We use roll to cast. No slots. Int/Wis/Cha mod +prof vs DC 11+spell level. Every recast of same spell, DC goes up by 1. Failed check- spell is locked for the day. Fail check but really need that spell to go off or you don't want to roll and risk it? No problem. You take level of exhaustion and...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the "Simple" Full Casting Class?

Playing Pew Pew Warlock is a blast (pun intended). It's simple but effective. EB+Eldricht spear+Agonizing blast+ Spell sniper feat and you are magical blaster sniper. Combine it with Darkness and Devil's sight invocations and you are golden. Nobody sees you (disadvantage on attacks vs you)...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the "Simple" Full Casting Class?

3.5 Warlock was simple. Limited amount of invocations (12 max at lv 20, but in the 3.x sweet spot, lvs 4-8, you have 3-5 invocations) and Eldrich Blast as spell like ability that scales similar to Sneak Attack. Everything else Warlock gets is passive (damage reduction, energy resistance, take 10...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the "Simple" Full Casting Class?

Warlock. Limited slots, all spells cast at same spell level, invocations that are dead easy. When in doubt, eldricht blast. Yes, there are complex builds for warlock, but by default, they are very easy to build and decently hard to screw up.

    D&D 5E (2024) Crazy armor idea

I would take a look at Grim&Gritty rules. It's similar idea to armor as DR, as both reduce damage to HP. Without adjusting base HP, at lower levels, it gives significant bonus. On the other hand you would need some sort of defense modifier cause PCs will get hit a lot.

    D&D 5E (2024) Firearms in the Forgotten Realms (+)

Also, with their cost, they are out of reach at low levels. With loading properties, they become useless for range weapon focused martials who get extra attack. They also have short range, which makes them worse at distances than bows. TBH, firearms are novelty items in 5e. At least in older...

    D&D 5E (2024) Firearms in the Forgotten Realms (+)

Well, D&D is full of anachronisms. Adding early firearms isn't that big of a deal. In real world, full plate and firearms are from the same period, 15-16ct. Janissaries used them in late 1400s, so did Black Army of Hungary under Matijaš Korvin (same period). Keeping them as simple weapons...

    D&D 5E (2024) Firearms in the Forgotten Realms (+)

Why martial weapons? Firearms should be simple weapons. That's their whole shtick. They are dead simple to use. Unlike bow that takes years to master, old black powder guns were dead simple. Point and pull the trigger. Also, because they take long to reload, they are in pure damage output...
