WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

I voted 1 cause 0 isn't an option. I'm buying their product, not their stocks. If company makes product that i like and want, i buy it and don't give 2 cents about company that made it and their corporate shenanigans. I look at shenanigans when i'm investing in stocks, cause it can directly...

D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

Stats wise, i like WoD approach. 9 stats. 3 physical, mental and social. Offense, defense and resilience. Dnd merges mental and social together. But approach is similar for most of editions. Str was offense (to hit, damage), Dex was defense (AC) and Con is resilience (HP). Mental was roughly...

D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

No, you don't need to spend a dime. Rules will be out in SRD and OGL, which is enough to play game for essentially free. Old books aren't invalidated, since this is just update to original 5e. You can mix and match old and new. They specifically kept most of core 5e untouched because of...

D&D General Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast the First Magic Missile: Why Gygax Still Matters to Me

For me personally, GG never meant anything. I didn't even know he existed well after i started playing D&D, and even then, i couldn't care less. Yeah, he "invented" ( or rather, popularized) ttrpgs. Good for him. If it weren't him, it would be someone else. But as far as d&d is concerned, Gygax...

D&D General Time Machine and a New D&D.

Go all out, make it ultimate power fantasy. Everything is overpowered. Throw balance in garbage bin. On more serious note, ditch classes. Point buy, fixed point budget depending on type of power level you want. So it can easily scale from grim and deadly to superhero. More flexibility for...

D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

I judge products based on their own merit, not based on who made it. Will this new version be hit or miss, it's up to market to decide. If people like it and want to buy it and play it, good for them and good for company that made product that resonates with it's customer base. As for DC20...

D&D General How Long Have You Gamed With Your Current Group

In October it will be 16 years of gaming with this group. In this group, there is my HS friend with whom i'm gaming for 20 years and my younger brother with whom i play for 18 years.

Olympics Talk: A brief discussion before it goes away

Olypics and combat sports is weird. People competing at Olympics are pro athletes, yet when it comes to combat sports, they insist on amateur rules (boxing, probably MT also if it becomes a thing). Dutch style kickboxing, with shin guards and headgear, could be very good Olympic sport, with full...

Olympics Talk: A brief discussion before it goes away

That kind of thinking is what made modern TKD the way it is. Laughable point touch sport with minimal contact. If they can't handle proper full contact combat sport, maybe it's better to remove them all together, rather than ruin it.

D&D General How long has your Current Group gamed together?

I think that's because people here lean on the older side. From anecdotal experience, most groups break due to big life changes ( going from hs to college, from college to work). You know, as you get older, social circle gets smaller, but stronger.

Olympics Talk: A brief discussion before it goes away

Watched lots of it since there was heat wave and going to beach was no no before 16-17h. Few random thoughts after watching it. I don't like they banned leg grabs in judo. Taekwoondo is rubbish. It needs to go away. It's barley even combat sport. Can we finally get proper full contact...

D&D 5E (2024) Lots of new Lance options

In 10 y of playing 5e, there wasn't a single time someone took lance. It always rubbed me wrong the way they did lance. Glad they finally added 2 handed property. On foot, lance is just very bad spear, and everything that can be used with spears ( polearm master) should be usable with lance...

    D&D 5E (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

I'm happy with 5e as is. Game i play is already heavily modified with house rules. We, as a group, didn't use any play test materials, nor did any of us read it. We might buy PHB, see what's changed and incorporate things we like into our current game, but full on switch, no.

D&D General How long has your Current Group gamed together?

In current configuration we have been playing since late 2008. We have one member who joined in 2014 but he is on hiatus from gaming regularly last 2 years. He pops sometimes for session when he can but he isn't regular. So, that's 16 or 10 years, depends how you want to count it. Other group...

D&D General Could a real human survive your D&D adventures?

HP in 5e are more or less pure plot armor. How much bad luck can you handle. Cause, when 5e charachter drops to 0 hp, it's 1-2 hits from being dead. Per rules, attack on unconscious creature is failed death save, crit is 2 failed saves. But unconscious condition says that any attack on that...

D&D General Could a real human survive your D&D adventures?

To be fair, D&D characters don't really suffer injuries per se. There are hundreds of pages of discussions on internet, but most agree that HP isn't meat. It's abstract mix of luck, glancing blows, stamina etc. That's why Vorpal weapons are the thing. One nat 20 on to hit, you die/enemy dies...

D&D General Could a real human survive your D&D adventures?

That's the crux of the problem. We haven't defined what constitutes as "real normal human". Classed systems like D&D, which focus on narrow horizontal growth, are notoriously bad for stating out normal humans. I could make reasonable approximation of my friend group in WoD or GURPS, but in D&D...

D&D General A History of Violence: Killing in D&D

And social combat is still combat. Complex and nuanced system for social combat is still complex and nuanced combat system. You just replace physical harm with emotional damage or reputation damage. If anybody remembers combat from old Monkey Island games, that would be it, more or less. Epic...

D&D General A History of Violence: Killing in D&D

And then there are people who like to play D&D as a ttrpg team version of Diablo. Go in, kill, loot, git good, kill bigger things, loot more, rinse and repeat. Which is totally legit play style. Most of one shots i run these days are like that. Very simple story, overpowered characters and tons...

D&D General A History of Violence: Killing in D&D

@Remathilis Because adventurers operate outside of society. One of defining traits of modern states is their sole monopoly on violence. But in typical d&d adventure, you venture outside of civilization, you are on the fringes. Wild frontier and frontier justice. There isn't state with it's...
