    Dice etiquette, rules, and superstitions

My doggo is a golden retriever and was certainly not a better player than a cat when young. Like many retrievers he had bad pica. Would eat ANYTHING. Now that he's older, he just likes to lay in the room and won't bother to get up to even sniff a dropped die, pencil, etc. Food and napkins, on...

    Dice etiquette, rules, and superstitions

I think it might have a chance of working with cheap plastic dice placed that way on a window ledge with hot sun shine through or the dash board of a car. But leave too long and they might not roll at all.

D&D 5E (2024) My preferred way of playing D&D 2024 is... miniatures or not?

I'd also be interested when rules were first published assuming gridded battlemaps. I think that using grids (e.g. Chessex battle maps, reverse sides of wrapping paper, etc.) probably started to become popular when modules publishing gridded maps (was Keep on the Borderlands the first instance...

Sorry for contributing to that. I have a bad habit of not reading through the entire thread before responding to a post. I think thats why it can sometimes feel like a pile on. Not that most posters are trying to pile on, they are just responding at the same time others are responding or are not...

I think it depends on where you lived and how easily you could get to various shops. We had some great hobby shops that would have lots of minis and pain supplies as well as TTRPG books. But, until we could drive, it was hard to get to those places. A parent would have to go out the way to bring...

D&D 5E (2024) My preferred way of playing D&D 2024 is... miniatures or not?

In the 80s we mixed it up. Mostly TotM, but players would try to map as they explored and we would often mark location on the player-created maps, or just indicate location on scratch paper. Often we would use minis, bottle caps, candy, whatever was on hand, to indicate placement, just on the...

Didn't the OD&D books recommend and expect that the players would also have the Chainmail rules?

Minis can still be helpful without full out tactical grid use. Showing marching order. Tracking initiative. Showing and tracking status effects (knock the mini over when prone, hand colored rubber bands on them or put them on top of colored poker chips to indicate status effects), etc.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Yeah, I can see that. I'd be interested if there has been research in why that is? I'm sure it is just part of broader beliefs in luck, but why did that evolve? Is there any evolutionary advantage? It is just a side effect of other cognitive developments? I mean, I can see how certain...

    Dice etiquette, rules, and superstitions

Not sure what has me thinking so much about dice this Friday evening that I'm making two posts. Probably just missing in-person play. As a DM or other player, how do you feel about the following scenarios? Also, add other edge cases or tables rules regarding dice in your response. 1. Die...

Dice with character...when is using them cheating?

There a spectrum of opinions regarding dice and the importance of balance. A healthy minority of gamers have strong preferences for balanced die. Louis Zocchi is the grandfather and first example I think of for this cohort. I've gone down this rabbit hole. When I got back into the hobby, older...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Nah, that's why we by cheap dice from from the big discount bin. It isn't just about variety of colors and styles, it is the imperfections that give dice character. You can call me out regarding gambler's fallacy when I'm playing on a VTT with digital rolls or when I use my unreasonably...

    Let's talk Virtual Tabletops!

I was going to post this. I mainly use them to create custom character sheets for non supported systems and just a bit of fiddling for some dice-roll calculations. The kinds of games I've done this for tend to be more rules light so I don't bother diving into the deep rabbit hole of getting...

    Let's talk Virtual Tabletops!

Looks very cool! I'll have to play around with it over the weekend. I don't think I'd sub right now, no matter how I like it as I'm in the middle of a long Warhammer campaign. But I'll bookmark it to check out when I'm ready to start a new campaign in another systems.

Love the measure sticks! I started doing that after watching a DM's Craft video on it. Mine use the same square wooden dowels and line markers like yours, except I alternately colored in ever other sement. I find that they are especially useful for gridless play. Instead of putting down a...

What VTT(s) do you most dislike and why? (Defenders welcome to defend)

Yeah, Pathfinder is a stand out in giving content free or at a great discount when you are in another system. I don't play PF, but I've been jealous of the great things that the PF2e community has done with the PF2e game system on Foundry. If I were to play PF2e, I couldn't imagine playing it in...

Use your VTT for battlemap and monster/NPC tokens and have your players use minis for their PCs. Best of both worlds for in-person play.

D&D 5E (2024) My preferred way of playing D&D 2024 is... miniatures or not?

Depends where you lived. In the 80s there were a number of FLGS with a good collection of fantasy minatures. In 1e, however, we mainly used them to track marching order. We never used battlemaps. When I got back into the hobby in my mid 40s, I had the disposable income to experiment with all...

I did the same, but glued the printed and puched card stock onto metal blanks. Very cheap, but look nice, feel good to pick up and move, don't get shifted or blown out of place easily, and can be used with my Aleo magnetic status tokens.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Beyond: Any negative experiences?

Also, if you can only get the standard covers with the bundle. I "overpaid" because I much prefer the alt covers. Then again, my son works at a LFGS and bought it for me with his employee discount.
