I totally agree, and that's one of the reasons Savage World / Savage Pathfinder is my goto system these days. You have magic points and you have mechanical spell effects, the trappings are all up to the players and their character concept.

I'm a one-media-at-a-time geezer. If I read I read, if I listen I listen. In the OPs situation I usually use an app with shut out other sounds-sounds, like train cabin, spring woods etc. Or I put down the book and listen to music - for travel I prefer classical baroque or 50ies/60ies jazz.

If the case is PCs I would just make a lost McGuffin of Volcano Activeness that require a bunch of rare material stuff to complete a ritual. If it's for an NPC I would just make stuff up, no need to invent any spells. Imho.
