D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

I'd say in a world like D&D, knowing about magic is pretty common. Kobolds and orcs have their shamans, etc. And there's still the 'lightly armored and frail-looking bit." :D The ability to actively intercept enemies is critical at the skirmish level, IMO. Once I had it, I never wanted to look...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlording the fighter

This entire thread is how the Battlemaster falls short. Nod or not, it's a poor substitute. As for the rest, it's just a matter of finding the right balance and method. You can't preemptively claim it's broken. :)

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

She's the one who's tossing spells around, obviously. :) With the way initiative works in D&D - I go, you go, I go - defender style mechanics fill in a needed void. They allow a smoother, less staccato ability to interfere with enemies.

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlording the fighter

I was pulling out an example, and don't want to do this forum thing where we're arguing about examples. I have no ability to shut down anything, but I will engage with debate based on its sincerity. The argument that the Warlord exists merely as "grid filling" is inaccurate. Its role and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlording the fighter

Cool. I'll quit the dumb memes and everyone else can quit the edition war ("money grab", really?) claptrap and we can all be a big happy family. Deal? :) Because I'll tell you what, that's what tells ME if we're having a conversation or if it's time to break out the dumb memes.

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

Okay. When I'm talking about the game, I'm talking about the core baseline. The default, if you will. While the modular things in the DMG are maybe a step above UA and houserules, they're not at the same level of table penetration as the PHB. That's important, otherwise there is no such thing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlording the fighter

u mad? ... Seriously, though, between the edition warring, crankiness, and missing the point, this is a pro post. Well done. [emoji38]

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

It's all well and good that there's optional rules, but that doesn't mean the base game has, by default, any severe injuries. I could start using the crit tables from Arms Law, but that doesn't mean 5e has rules for slipping on invisible, dead turtles. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlording the fighter

And, like before, Action Surge is a once-and-done sort of deal. You get 1 round of being very helpful. It's not even close. The Help action isn't much Help either, since it's a full action. I don't see any way to reconcile the needs of a potential buff-centric Warlord class with the existing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlording the fighter

OK? I don't think that is an adequate treatment. Well, no amount of dice will get you a stun or blind, for example, under the current scenario. And the incredibly small pool of dice is a major bummer. A further problem with your example is that ... well, that's it. That's everything for a few...

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

Ummmm... As much so, at least, as a Fighter's Second Wind can. If people want to get shirty about specifics, that's fine, but yes, some degree of real healing - hopefully including an ability to get downed allies back into the fight - would be, if not critical, at least important. I'd have to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlording the fighter

It's only a difference in frequency and some magnitude from what they could do at 3rd level; it's the problem endemic to the Battlemaster's design. Not to be glib about it, but at 11th level, the Battlemaster has 5d10 every short rest, using the same abilities that were balanced for a 3rd level...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's exactly wrong with the fighter?

You're still left with severe reaction limitations, since OAs use those up. Lighten up on those, and it looks better.

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

Oh yeah. That one was really wacky. The thing about all these oddball concept classes is, though, they lend the game some real character. Soulknives, Avengers, Runepriests, Dragon Shamans, Seekers, Duskblades, bladesingers... Those really showcase an editions's strengths and add a lot to the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlording the fighter

Eh? The Warlock was in Complete Arcane (2004). I don't think it's a stretch at all; the concept was certainly there. That gives it more history than the Warlock. Implementations varied for most classes from their 3e versions.

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

Have you ever seen a defender at work? That's.... Not even remotely how marking plays out. The DM is still making all the tactical decisions; the defender is there to capitalize on any opportunities. I'm just reading the rules and letting them tell me what's happening. [emoji38] In D&D combat...

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

Nobody needs to look it up. Marking makes intuitive sense if you're not actively trying to misunderstand it, and it is well explained in the class write-up. You don't need to know soccer - but you asked and I figured I'd share the knowledge. Your second argument ignores the players who *do*...

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

Yeah, Avenger is one of those concepts - like Seekers - that worked well as a class, but didn't (imo) have much thematic resonance. I don't think too many people longed for "unarmored holy executioners with big swords" before the class was made. Kind of like 3e dragon shamans, etc. It's a cool...
