New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

This is nonsensical. It amounts to, "this is okay because I'm used to it." If D&D, tomorrow, removed hit points and levels, but added marking, it would be a less abstract game. If it used simultaneous initiative, it would be a less abstract game. If it started using Phoenix Command rules for...

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

Uh, you're the one who brought it up. We're talking about it because you brought it up. You asked what "marking" even means and now you have your answer.

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

Marking is a soccer/football term which amounts to sticking to a guy and preventing them from organizing an effective offense. Hilariously, it's used by defenders, often against strikers. Really! Look it up. In a colloquial sense it's "keep that monster occupied!" In a narrative sense, it's a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlording the fighter

Sorcerers and Warlocks hardly have that long a pedigree. I was specifically talking about mechanical and conceptual overlap, though. If the overlap among those classes isn't a concern, it can't be a concern for warlords.

If there's room for Paladins, Rangers, Sorcerers, etc., there's room for Warlords.

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlording the fighter

Even if you scratched out "temporary," the scaling on Rally is pretty terrible. :) As I said in the other thread, the main bits missing are (1) Something that lets you "warlord" full-time, enabling and/or buffing, much like Cantrips let a caster Cleric or Wizard full-time. And (2) More potent...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlording the fighter

I don't think the Fighter chassis is any more suitable for a full-featured Warlord than it would be for Rangers or Paladins, and for similar reasons. The main criteria a Warlord needs to fit, imo, is that it works as a Cleric (or Bard) replacement. Just like you don't give Clerics or Bards...

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

No.... Part of the whole Warlord concept is that a party with a Warlord shouldn't necessarily need to rely on a Cleric/Bard for their healing/buffing, and the Battlemaster falls well short of this metric. One issue is with how watered down and limited these abilities all end up, and it's very...

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

Uh, taken more seriously and given more weight when it comes to game design questions? Yeah, probably. Experience matters. Automatically right? No way. And game design isn't hard? It's simple? Professional designers aren't any more informed than any average poster? You're adorable.

No, but it does lend his opinions more weight than yours. I trust a doctor's medical opinion a whole lot more than some dude who read stuff on WebMD. Game design is a field of study. A craft, if you will. He's a celebrated and respected designer with a host of big successes. You're an angry...

New D&D Survey: What Do you Want From Older Editions?

Why limit bardic songs per day? Let the DM decide when the character is getting hoarse. Why limit rages per day? Let the DM decide how angry the Barbarian is. Why limit superiority dice per combat? Let the DM decide how many is appropriate.

D&D 5E (2014) Does the new ammunition rule screw up dual hand crossbow?

It was an unnecessary "clarification" though, given its near-zero mechanical impact. That's the wacky bit - that of all things they decided this required their attention.

Yeah, don't play up the "whoops you're dead" bits. Older editions work best with long-term attrition. If there's random death traps everywhere, you'll just encourage weird behavior like herding sheep through a dungeon, 20-step SOP's for advancing 10 feet, etc. The important part is to be fair...

D&D 5E (2014) Does the new ammunition rule screw up dual hand crossbow?

I'd say this is what happens when Sage Advice makes wacky rulings. In this case, flavor restrictions without balance considerations.

    Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia

Oh boy. It's a tad complicated, so here goes. :) There's OD&D, which is quite different from most of what came after. It's pretty primitive and uses Chainmail rules in places. I would go with a retro-clone like Swords & Wizardry instead, since OD&D is not really written in such a way that it's...

D&D 5E (2014) Does the new ammunition rule screw up dual hand crossbow?

The biggest irony, of course, is that the one usage of Crossbow Expert which seemed completely inarguable - using both a melee weapon and a hand crossbow, drow-style - is now expressly forbidden. (1) Woo. John Woo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEFrd2mtLrg (Ignore the terrible dub...

    Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia

That's actually a very worthy goal! Don't limit yourself to D&D, though - there have many advances in RPG design over the decades, and there's some great newer games coming out, too! With that said, I think RC D&D is one edition that's really stood the test of time. It has a tight design...

    Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia

Oh yes, it's standalone. You can use anything from the BECMI and BX lines with it though, which are plentiful. It's a very simple game at the core and scales up elegantly. It starts incredibly basic for players and DMs and ends up adding in options all over the place. You should have an easy...
