    Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia

Yep. A lot of the rules from Master, for example, were helpful down to 3rd level or earlier. Weapon Mastery is the best example of this. Mystics became core, too.

    Dungeons & Dragons Rules Cyclopedia

It's all edited together into a single rule set. And it is fantastic. Probably the tightest rule set TSR ever released.

    D&D 5E Player's Handbook Official Errata

No, that's incorrect. A vague rule is not the same as, and doesn't operate the same as, a clearly worded and specific rule. The designers have chosen one interpretation of the published vagueness. Whether or not this more closely matches the ideal rule that existed only in their minds is...

    D&D 5E Player's Handbook Official Errata

Clearly their fault for not accurately divining the platonic ideals of those rules in the developers' minds. Also, we have always been at war with Eastasia.

WotC did just rehire SKR. Weird monk nerfs were inevitable.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Variant Rules

WotC isn't our crazy aunt Sally where we need to pretend that, no, we super appreciate that ugly sweater she gave us for Christmas. It's fair to call a spade a spade. The players-roll variant doesn't work because they got the math dramatically wrong. The vitality points option is both...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Variant Rules

It's pretty clear that none of the mechanics in the article saw testing or table use from WotC. It's as useful as some dude on a forum putting up his poorly-thought-out house rules. Check the math on the "players roll all dice" section. And ponder using those VP rules as they stand. Free or...

    D&D 4E Who's still playing 4E

Of 4e? I have the books. Of Zeitgeist? I have a sub through RPG Now.

I am! Currently running Zeitgeist. Which is seriously awesome, btw.

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

Yup. And for the record I'm all for "don't sweat the details" but then we have a Sage Advice answer which sweats all the details. So...

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

Does it, though? A cleric with shield and mace tries to cast a spell with somatic components. How does she do this? An Eldritch Knight with shield and sword uses his class feature to cast a Cantrip and them attack. Is this possible for him? The "free hand" bit for somatic components is in...

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

Actually, I think Crawford's ruling has an unintended consequence of making bows and crossbows impossible to reload and fire. :D But moving past that... For the EK there's also weapon+shield, not just 2H. And I'll extend your list.... If the longbow or the EK have "free enough" hands at...

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

Sorry, as I clarified above, I meant the EK's features that let them make an attack as a bonus action after casting a spell. They have no free hands with which to do so, unless they are single-wielding a 1H weapon. But I agree, this ruling from Sage Advice effectively turns the "ammunition"...

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

I'm going to go ahead and quote myself, because I'm thinking through the other implications of this "free hand" ruling. Obviously, this means that Eldritch Knights need to keep a hand free (and stick with one-handed weapons) if they intend to use their War Magic feature for any cantrips with...

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

Now one hand crossbow going "pew pew pew" outperforms other martial attacks. All Sage Advice did was police the flavor. Is any of that relevant after this bizarre Sage Advice ruling? And relax - I don't have a horse in this race. :)

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

Now apply this logic to the Eldritch Knight's Warcaster features. And the ability of a Cleric to cast spells with somatic components. This ruling is a lot more far-reaching than gun kata with dual crossbows. That it's unclear and poorly edited, basically. :)

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

I think you're entering into weird territory with stat mods and the like. And ignoring the "melee" bit isn't kosher. But okay. I've seen ONE person advocate for more attacks per round.
  18. Obryn

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

I don't think this matches with Sage Advice. I don't see any line you can draw where you can't reload a hand crossbow while holding a hand crossbow in the other hand, but CAN load a hand crossbow while holding a shield or sword in the other hand. (Same with somatic components and free hands...

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

Where are you getting that? Per this ruling, a single hand crossbow gets the same number of attacks as folks were thinking dual hand crossbows did. The offensive power of the feat has not been reduced at all.
  20. Obryn

    Sage Advice (18 May 2015)

So just to see if I get this right - you can cast a spell requiring a free hand for somatic components while holding weapon+shield or a 2-handed weapon. But you can't load a hand crossbow. And the only non-controversial part of the feat - rapier+xbow - is now verboten, while single hand...
