I think people talking about WoTC not wanting its old fans back are completely off base. They don't make a pardoy of Tome of Horrors, bring back the thief with backstab, change magic missile back to auto-hit etc.... to please the NEW fans. They don't have Elmore do a cover and make the rules...

Color me curious. Can't work up the energy to get annoyed at this sort of thing anymore. The whole DDI thing ate it up so now it's mild interest until WoTC decides which way their moving again.

In terms of marketing, Essentials is all up in the older players 'base' if you will. Even the carton ad they just did with the 30 second bunny theater isn't about some new 4e adventure, it's about a 30 year old adventure. Much of the language of Essentials comes right from older editions...

This is where Paizo is getting my money. I like seeing how the setting is unfolding and will be curious to see where future adventure paths take us.

They could never get away with this in a print publication. Their complete lack of discipline on this matter is disappointing. Dragon and Dungeon continue to fall down the slippery slope of poor digital content management.

The probloem with this low level of access requiring payment for higher features is that it's competing against things like Guild Wars and other free online play games. While the two are different overall experiences, from many sources, it seems that the base for table top RPG is shrinking...

I honestly think that if WoTC is going to continue making D&D, they need to get as far away from books as possible. More miniatures, tiles, board games, and things that lead you online to the DDI. But then again, I think they need to make the DDI free as the character creator part and charge...

This is just my opinion, but as mentioned in the OP, I don't think WoTC has the support/staff to do it. As we've seen in recent months, the compalints about the lack of content in Dragon tend to follow that. Many argue that the DDI update was held back due to... lack of staff/support.

I'll be curuious to see how they do the Warlord. I can't imagine we won't have a 'Marshal' build as the Warlord is similiar to the Marshal already and we haven't seen that named used yet.

While WoTC haven't outright said that they will cease support for pre-esentials material, and indeed, we have some support for some odd ball classes like the Runepriest this month, what would people like to see? I like the builds in the various Essentials books. I can easily see myself playing...

I remember when I said this on RPG.net and they were like, "No, essentials is a limited line release product. It'll all go back after it's done."
