    Compendium Updated!

My main problem with the Compendium remains the same: no explanatory rules. So, for instance, a Power lets me either stun or daze an opponent. What's the difference between those again? Whoops, looks like I have to get out that PHB after all.

Mearls talks about how he hates resistances

Some people like to reward players for building on a theme, rather than punish them for daring to deviate from mix-maxed super-builds. A cliché? In D&D? Sacre bleu!!

Mearls talks about how he hates resistances

Just some more thoughts ... I've decided I don't dislike Resistances nearly as much as I dislike Vulnerabilities. I like the idea of the Ice Wizard of the North fighting the Frost Giant with icicles and frozen shackles, and I don't want his allies saying "You know, you'd get an extra 5 damage...

Game Mecahnics Versus Role Playing Focus

Thanks! I didn't realize that! Or, uhm, no. The opposite. I was speaking in general terms. "3E is much more gearhead friendly then previous editions (as all PCs can be tweaked far more than any PC in any previous edition), thereby attracting a much greater share of gearheads as a percentage of...

    4E and Player Trust

No more than keeping track of HP or whether you've used that potion from three adventures ago.

Mearls talks about how he hates resistances

His suggestion wouldn't fix the problem of "wizard from the north" not learning ice magic, as those spells could give his enemies AC bonuses. Still better off with Fireball. I like Oni's suggestion. S'mon's too (see the comments on the blog).

Game Mecahnics Versus Role Playing Focus

3E was the high water mark there. 4E has backed away from that by (essentially) saying that only adventuring-related skills are reduced to rules. The removal of Craft, Profession and Perform from the Skills list and the separation of Rules & Fluff in the Powers section are examples of moving...

Game Mecahnics Versus Role Playing Focus

Yeah, like that recent Rules Cyclopedia. Other than the fact that he's apparently "Lawful" my elf doesn't have a single rule representing his personality. It's all spells, longsword, AC, etc., etc. A machine without a soul, as you say. But he gets a little XP for killing things, and lots of XP...

Game Mecahnics Versus Role Playing Focus

This is ridiculously good advice. I had to learn it the hard way, and I can assure everyone that it's 113% correct.

Game Mecahnics Versus Role Playing Focus

Me neither. Intellectually I understand that some people like it, but I don't "get it." I don't get a fix from tweaking a rule-set. Too meta. But it's not your age or anything, just your play style. Older versions of D&D were useless for gear heads. There was nothing to tweak, so they didn't...

Who heals in a Druidic society?

What's with this assumption that every NPC in the world has a PC character class? The DMG is pretty clear that such is not the case. If people need a healer, they go to a healer. That person has ranks in Heal, maybe some healing rituals, maybe some herbs, etc. Maybe they even have skills or...

    Organic Mythology

Per the books, D&D gods aren't created by man to fulfill purposes. They simply are, like mountains or the sun. Or you. What's your purpose? D&D Gods aren't mythological. They actually show up occasionally, and send Angels of Vengeance down to battle Primordials or enforce edicts.

    Getting Ready To GM Again

Those tokens look like too much work for the benefit. Conditions don't last long ("save ends" or "next turn" being the two common durations), and the players that imposed the condition can (and should) remind you when necessary that the condition is in place. Even as a player I have easily...

Sigil, planar cities, 4E and older editions

... is not the topic of this thread. I'm not trying to be rude here. But we're discussing Sigil as described in the 4E Manual of the Planes. Not how it used to be. Maybe the terminology and portal types you describe will be revived in DMG II or some other book, but at the moment they're just...

Character Creation - Simplified or Detailed?

I voted "Simple", because I think you mean the rules section. I think the rules for making a character (Stats, Level, Race, Class, etc.) should be fast, streamlined and simple. D&D 4E is much more to my taste in this regard than D&D 3E (or similar games, like Arcana Unearthed or Iron Heroes)...

Sigil, planar cities, 4E and older editions

This thread is discussing planar locations as they are described in the 4E Manual of the Planes. Per the Sigil entry: Granted it says "Some" portals, but the impression given is definitely one of portal impermanence and lack of control over the portals' size, location or destination. Some...

Sigil, planar cities, 4E and older editions

As I thought a little about this yesterday, two things settled in my mind: 1. Sigil is definitely the Casablanca of the Multiverse. There are several establishments much like Rick's (yet even more so), and these establishments would be hard pressed to do business in their preferred manner under...

    D&D Insider: Losing your toys

Are you deliberately being obtuse, or just arguing for argument's sake? There's a third explanation for your actions as well, but it's even less polite. For the dozenth time, all I (and several others who have posted) would like is the option to backup/reinstall the software we have to date...

Sigil, planar cities, 4E and older editions

The CoB being oldest "makes sense" to me as the Elemental Chaos is a native environment for the Primordial and Archons. Nothing (other than possibly the Lady of Pain) is native to Sigil. So naturally cities would be built first where the beings originate, and Sigil would only have been built...

    D&D Insider: Losing your toys

Pardon? Did that make sense when you typed it? Because it doesn't really parse when I read it. Once I "pay" for something it's no longer "free", IMO. Do you feel differently somehow? Right now I'm considering paying $56, since I know I'll want the PHB2 rules, as well as the Arcane and Divine...
