    Celestial Pact Warlock--front line duty

This is my current DMPC for my son's campaign. I've only been playing it a little while, but it seems fun and effective. The current level and build is :Human Variant (with Great Weapon Master), Folk Hero, Fighter (Great Weapon Fighter) 1/Warlock (Celestial) 2. Starting off with the Fighter...

I know magic items are unnecessary but

I pretty much just follow the tables in the DMG. However, I always use the quirks and history tables too, so there are no "generic +1 longsword". So one of my player's favorite items is a +3 longbow. But it's not just a +3 longbow, it's Faroth Dur, the Hunter of the Darkest Depths. It's made...

Using beyond the wall's magic system in 5e

So playing a caster doesn't suck. You seem uninterested in maintaining fairness and balance between your players, but I'm not uninterested. I want to make sure that the guy who chooses to play a caster isn't punished for that choice. If you want to limit casters to cantrips and 1st-2nd level...

Using beyond the wall's magic system in 5e

Actually, you know what? The easiest way to implement Beyond The Wall, with the fewest changes to the 5E system, would be- 1. Allow all spellcasters to cast Prestidigitation, Druidcraft, etc. with an Arcana/Nature/Religion check. 2. Cap advancement in any spellcaster class to the level prior to...

Using beyond the wall's magic system in 5e

Uh... some classes are a little more dependent on their spellcasting ability to be effective, no? A Ranger limited to 1st and 2nd level spells isn't nearly as handicapped as a wizard limited to 1st and 2nd level spells.

Using beyond the wall's magic system in 5e

It's very evocative, but it also nerfs casters pretty hard relative to the other classes. You could limit all PCs to 5th level or so I guess, but otherwise you'd need to increase the power of casters in other ways so they stay balanced with Fighters and Rogues. My suggestion would be to-- 1...

Wand of Lightning Bolt - how good is it really?

Hmmmm ... you know, I've been playing 5E for a couple years, and you're right. But it never really sank in that you could use wands and such across class lines like that. House rule time. The idea of Barbarians using a wand is just right out. I think I'm going to House Rule that to use a...

Wand of Lightning Bolt - how good is it really?

I think it's helpful to ask what the wand allows the PCs to do that they cannot already do. 7th level PCs already can cast Lightning Bolt (or equivalent spells if they're not Wiz/Sor). So they aren't casting any spells they can't already cast. This isn't like giving 3rd level PCs a way to...

Is Dark Sun Coming To D&D?

I agree with the poster above arguing for Psionic sub-classes. I'm fine with having a dedicated Psion class, but there should be psionic equivalents to the Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster. Sort of unrelated, but I hope the 5E Dark Sun bases the Templars off of the Warlock instead of the...

    Anti-Optimization: Entertainer with 8 Charisma

Yup! In fact that's in the character background too. As you know, Skills don't have to be linked to a particular stat, so I have written down two Performance skill modifiers, +1 and +6. The first one (using Charisma) is for when he's trying to improvise or banter with the crowd, and then +6...

    Should fighters be skill monkeys?

There's an argument for giving some classes one automatic skill for free (Fighters=Athletics, Rangers=Survival, Clerics=Religion, etc. etc.), but other than that, I don't see the need to give Fighters more skills. They have the same number of skills (2) as most classes. You've got backgrounds to...

How do we fix the Sorcerer?

I ran Curse of Strahd as a DM with a sorcerer player, and he was one of my better players so he was very effective. That's the thing with all of the classes--they're good enough that the real differences between them are player skill. That said, I'm not entirely happy with the Sorcerer either...

Legendary Magic Items - your experiences?

Legendary items are cool as hell. Look, the DM can throw unlimited monsters of any CR at the party. The DMG encounter guidelines are not a gun held to your head. There is no way to "break" the game by handing out legendary items. The only consequence is ... you are now expected to do legendary...

    Anti-Optimization: Entertainer with 8 Charisma

Just for fun, I'm making a High Elf Entertainer Rogue (Arcane Trickster) with a dump stat in Charisma. He's really optimized for Arcane Trickster (good DEX and INT) and might pick up some Bladesinger levels at some point. Those two sub-classes are really complementary and Green Flame Blade...

D&D 5E (2014) If you were to rename the Halflings for a neutral setting, what would you name them? (thread 2/3)

I don't know if it's neutral, but what I did (because I don't like halflings outside of Middle Earth) is named them "Rodens", and they're furry rodent people. Lightfoot are re-named "Micin", and Stouts are re-named "Ratkin". Obviously there's good opportunity here for Underdark halflings, aka...

To Mike Mearls: C'mon, bring back the whole D&D Multiverse!

No thanks. What I've noticed is that I like campaign worlds as they're originally conceived by their initial creators. But I usually dislike what TSR/Wizards does to "update" them to new Editions. The only Edition reversion that I liked was the Time of Troubles update for FR. Everything since...

D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Do they stifle creativity and reduce options?

I hear you. I get it. I still disagree. In a game like D&D, well designed Feats are like customized class abilities. They don't restrict anyone, but give you something that goes above and beyond what's normal. Just look at the Mobile Feat and the Monk's Unarmored Movement. Any game should have...

    The Monetization of D&D Play

I'd rather pay a $5 cover charge than feel obligated to buy snacks or drinks that I don't especially want. I try to eat healthy and I'd rather bring myself some carrots and maybe a hummus to share with the table. It's not like you have to pay this money to play D&D. No one is charging you money...

A house rule that made your class perfect

    1. Sorcerer recovers some SP on an SR. 2. Paladin gets Archery fighting style, Smites work with "your style's" attacks (for Dex build, Elf of the Ancients paladins). 3+. I wish I could say that there was "one house rule" that fixed Warlock, but I essentially had to re-write the class to be...

Fluff, Rules, and the Cleric/Warlock Multiclass (WITH POLL!)

The rules don't prohibit it. The campaign setting might prohibit it, but this is of course very campaign-specific. If your campaign world has very interventionist, micro-managing deities then it's quite conceivable they'd forbid Cleric-Warlock multiclassing ("No man can serve two masters")...
