    Call of Cthulhu is pretty bleak, you character is likely to die or go insane, and the ancient Gods can and do wipe people or entire cities out when the players can't delay them.

    D&D General What makes a TTRPG a "D&D Variant" to you?

    I agree I would go as far to say to some degree setting doesn't even need to be fantasy. There were a load of d20 variant games like Judge Dredd, and a Call of Cthulhu that I was put off by the level/class structure.

    You would need to roll d% on the "flightless air shark table" applying the appropriate modifiers for starting altitude and surface being flown over to determine the result. Don't roll high.

    I think Dread was influential, not in the fact you saw everyone playing with Jenga towers, but you did see more non-traditional resolution mechanics after it.
