What is your favorite edition of D&D and why?

    AD&D 1E is my favorite.

    I don't miss the magazines (/ducks)

I do miss Dungeon and Dragon. I used a lot of stuff from the magazines over the last 29 years, but if they were still around they'd be full of 4E stuff exclusively, and so of little use or interest to me. Knockspell, Fight On!, Pathfinder, and Kobold Quarterly are my replacements, and I'm...

    I love AD&D

AD&D is my game of choice. I've been running it for over 25 years, with the few interruptions.

    Games you won't play

Specific games I wouldn't play: Shadowrun: I tried it, but hated the setting and the rules. Tunnels and Trolls: Tried it, too simple and jokey for me. Runequest: After a long process of character generation my PC stabbed himself in the gut with his two-handed spear in his first combat...

    Surviving low-level old school D&D

Some PC deaths are bound to happen at low level (And higher levels, too), but there are ways to minimize the number/frequency of such deaths. 1) Hirelings If you only have 4 PCs, that's a dangerously small group. Hirelings (zero-level fighters) should be acquired as soon as possible. For evil...

Level Up! ? Kncockspell? KQ? Fight On! ?

I get Fight On!, Knockspell, and Kobold Quarterly, all in print. Level Up is Goodman Games' new 4E magazine, correct? Not my cup of tea. I haven't heard of Big Iron Vault. I also download Footprints (no hardcopy available).

Was V's act evil? (Probable spoilers!)

On the one hand, if all black dragons are utterly and irredeemably evil, exterminating them is a good thing. Of course Varsuvius also eliminated lots of half-dragons. Were all of them evil also? On the other hand, even if all those slain were evil, Varusivius' motives count. IMO, his/her...

    The Accidental TPK

I presided over a TPK once, and it was player-driven - sort of. The group found a "backdoor" into the dungeon, avoiding walking right into a red dragon's ambush. This alternate means of entry was a near-vertical lava tube. I had them roll to notice that the sharp edges of the lava could...

    The Qullan lives!

Plane Sailing, you created the qullan? A little OT, but do you have any fluff-type info about them that never made it to the FF?

Rant -- GM Control, Taking it Too Far?

Architectofsleep, don't you think that you might be overreacting? The DM's responsibility is to maintain a fun, gameable, and coherent world. That may cause him to restrict certain backgrounds or classes because they don't fit. As for the names, I found your examples to be amusing, and...

    Highest level you've played

The highest that I played in a 1-shot was a 30th level cavalier paladin (AD&D 1E) . The DM had purchased a Master Level D&D module (from the Mentzer BECMI rules) and told us that we could have any magic items that we wished, as long as they were from the DMG or the Forgotten Realms books. That...

Tucker's Kobolds -- really that tough a challenge?

Not that deadly. Damage is 2d6, fire rate is once per 2 rounds, maximum. It won't get into holes on the ceiling (the classic murder hole), but it will get into lateral holes (from which kobolds are sniping). Sure, but if it does get into one, the party can kill the exposed kobolds and...

Tucker's Kobolds -- really that tough a challenge?

I agree that a prepared party of 9th level characters should prevail fairly handily against "Tucker's Kobolds". Heavily armored PCs will be almost unhittable by kobolds, and if fighter-types get into melee they will slay many kobolds per round (they get one attack per level against the < 1 HD...

Combats in 3.5/4E vs older editions

I can't really speak to the OP's statement, but I disagree that pre-3E editions fell apart around level 10. The highest-level PC in my 1E campaign is 14th, and the game still seems to work fine, nor is it that difficult to challenge the PCs.

    How "big" are character levels?

In AD&D (at least in 1E) the ability to advance in levels without limit is kind of like a super power. Almost no one can do that; most people were just zero level, so the stats for lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) are somewhat reasonable in that light. In AD&D around 9th-11th level is "name"...

    (Rambling) Why 4e doesn't "feel" 1e...

Not all of your points above are accurate (I doubt that most campaigns use or used straight 3d6 in order to determine stats in 1E, that's typically an OD&D thing; stat mins and maxes can disqualify you from certain races or classes, but you'd need truly awful stats to be limited to one choice of...

Combat positioning in D&D (all editions) and other games

I have run AD&D 1st edition for 28+ years - and I've used a hex map for almost all of that time. There are rules about positioning in the 1E DMG. Obviously, I do believe that a hex map improves the game.

1E vs Forked Thread: Is 4E doing it for you?

My experience is with AD&D 1E rather than with Basic D&D or OD&D, but, IME, in that game death due to loss of HP was more common than death due to failing a saving throw vs. an "instant kill" effect. A beginning AD&D PC can't afford plate mail, and even a fighter might fall to one hit. At higher...
