    Fiend Folio

Good question. I always wondered what their back story was, also. The Fiend Folio entry is pretty cryptic.

What D&D is to me, in terms of editions.

It didn't look like a wheel (more like a box) but theplanes in the diagram of the outer planes in the 1st edition PHB are the same as those of the Great Wheel (though Planescape later introduced some name changes), and are in the same arrangement (excepting Concordant Opposition/The Outlands)...

Games that didn't survive first contact. . .

I once played a game based on "Usagi Yojimbo" (sp?) which is apparently a comic book about grim, funny-animal samurai. I wasn't familiar with (or too interested in) the subject matter, but the GM was very enthused, so we gave it a try. Oddly, the setting was not the thing that killed the game...

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull [spoilers]

I saw it Sunday. I'd rank it above Temple of Doom, but below Holy Grail. Raiders is the best of the 4, of course. The "science-fictional" trappings of this movie were quite different from the "fantasy" trappings of the previous 3, but that didn't bother me. Indiana Jones is very Pulpy in feel...

    about fireball area of effect

In 1st edition (and 2E, too, I think) a fireball is a 20' radius sphere (which is roughly 6 m), not a 60' diameter. It is round (in the sense of spherical, not circular). That said, the fireball will conform to the space in which it is detonated. So it fills a volume equal to that of the 20'...

How is D&D of any edition realistic?

Unfortunately, I don't have the time to read this whole thread, so I'm just going to respond to the OP. Maybe somebody has already made the points that I'm about to make. Here goes... I think that previous editions of (A)D&D were not intended to be realistic. In a realistic game, there would be...

Andre Norton's Return to Quag Keep

I read the original, many years ago (before I played D&D for the first time) and liked it. It's part of what contributed to me becoming a gamer. I read the the sequel (earlier this year) and strongly disliked it. The sequel is "by Andre Norton and Jean Rabe". IMO, it's mostly by the latter, and...

    Andre (Alice) Norton Books?

No, Daybreak 2250 AD and No Night Without Stars are two different books. The first one is post apocalyptic with a "Gamma Wolrd" flavor, the second is set on another Earth (alternate or parallel world).

    Andre (Alice) Norton Books?

I also recommend the Witch World books and Quag Keep - but I don't recommend "Return to Quag Keep" - that was authored by Norton and Jean Rabe. IMO, it was mostly written by the latter, and it is pretty bad.

    Help Me Define Heroism

I'd agree with Starman on this. Hercules is definitely a Type III hero - he strangles two serpents sent to kill him while still a baby. Most of the Greek Heroes are either Type II or Type III, as they are literally half mortal and half god. Roger Zelazny's "Amber" books also contain plenty of...

    elves:flawed logic

I think that elven dogs and cats are both from mythology/folklore. In previous editions of the game both elven dogs (cooshee, I guess from "cu sidhe") and cats exist. Perhaps 3E has some stats for both? Tree surgery?

    Campaign ideas- jungle/ lost city

Sounds like a very cool idea for a campaign. I ran both "The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan" and "Dwellers of the Forbidden City". I assume that the Dungeon adventures that you're talking about are "The Elephant's Graveyard" in Dungeon #15 and "The Leopard Men" in Dungeon #22? I have no personal...

Goodman Game Sale. What are you going to buy?

I love the DCCs, but I already own almost all of them. Those few that I don't have I don't want. IMO, the DCC minis were good, but so overpriced that a 20% discount isn't enough to make them worthwhile. So I don't think that I'll but anything in this sale.

    Women and Children first?

IMC, the roles of the sexes vary from species to species. Some of it dates back to an old Dragon article by Roger Moore (maybe called "the Humanoid Point of View" - I'm not sure, as it's been a long time). The evil humanoids (goblinoids, orcs, kobolds, gnolls, etc) are all patriarchal, with the...

If you are willing to play first edition AD&D, I am looking for a player for a (nearly) weekly game in Columbia MD.

How would a Flat World work, visually?

Due to the curvature of the Earth, I don't think that you could ever see the Appalachians from the top of Pike's Peak. On a flat world, things like humidity would still limit visibility. I did a quick Google, and this page (http://www.texasep.org/html/air/air_4iss_vis.html) claims a...

    monsters using their treasures

I run a 1E AD&D game and I've done it for years. I've faced it as a player also. Didn't the giants in the G-series modules have magic items that they used against the PCs?

    infravision: how do one see?

I'd say that skeletons in a sealed chamber would be invisible to infravision. IMC, things like wights, spectres, wraiths, etc are visible to infravision because their connection to the Negative Material makes them colder than their surroundings.

Tell me your tale about the Tomb of Horrors

I've never run this module - but I did play in it. It was certainly challenging, but it didn't seem as deadly as so many stories make it out to be. Our GM told us that our PCs knew that the dungeon was of legendary deadliness, so we acted accordingly. When we were exploring this place, we had a...
