    D&D's Origins in Gothic Fiction

I like Dracula also. The book has a terrific beginning and a terrific ending, but the middle is a bit of a swamp of Victorian sentimentality. Still, a good book, though. Frankenstein is, IMO, the first science fiction story and still contains a lesson for scientists today (and that lesson is...

    Iron Age Monsters

I gather that the old Greek standbys that the Romans copied/coopted (chimera, gorgon, pegasus, etc) don't fit your criteria? How about the strix - bloodsucking witches that could turn into birds and were likely the inspiration for striges. You might also take a look at Cthulhu Invictus. I...

Giants: How big should they be in an a Fantasy RPG?

Wow, old thread - and I'm not going to read it all, so maybe I'll just be repeating what someone else wrote already... IMO, the assumption that all large creatures are about the same size, despite their being a factor of 2 range in sizes (and thus about 8 in weights) leads to the idea that...

    Just need 20 more xp!

That isn't a 1e rule. You don't have to get exactly the amount that you need to break level, losing the rest. Maybe you're thinking of one of these rules: A) If you get enough XP to break level, and don't train/level up, then you gain no further XP if you continue to adventure. or B) If you...

    Some Savage Worlds questions...

I'm a player in a Realms of Cthulhu game using the "normal" damage rules. So far it has not been deadly (no deaths, no insanity, and I don't think I've even taken a wound), but I've only played 3 sessions so far. In regular Savage Worlds beginning characters are harder to take down than ordinar...

Non-D&D Fantasy Games - the best and why?

I wouldn't really count OSRIC and Labyrinth Lord as "non-D&D". OSRIC is basically 1E AD&D (my favorite game of all) and Labyrinth Lord is essentially BECMI I think. Likewise, Castles & Crusades is a mixture of AD&D 1E and D&D 3e. I'd call that "D&D" as well. I think that old-style games are...

    D&D's Origins in Gothic Fiction

When I read it, I experienced the first (original feels derivative). Also, many scenes struck me as unintentionally funny. Of those, I've only read Frankenstein, which is a book that I like very much. So many movies have been made of it, but the movie makers have failed to understand the book IMO.

Does anyone play Palladium Fantasy Rpg

I have played it (1E version), but not for years. We had a good time, but it would never replace D&D for me. Certain spells/items in PRPG seemed to be automatic "I win" buttons - but that could've been just an inexperienced GM. The way that stats are rolled led to odd things like the 3' tall...

    AD&D 1st edition and 2nd edition differences?

Most of the differences have been mentioned already, but there are many small differences (e.g. in how particular spells work).

    D&D's Origins in Gothic Fiction

I read it and thought it was terrible. Just one man's opinion, of course.

    Poker as a Game Mechanic

Deadlands uses poker as a game mechanic, in several ways. The effectiveness of hucksters' spells is based on how good a poker hand they can make after drawing a certain number of cards. Poker chips are allotted to each character to represent luck; they are used up for rerolls or to lessen or...

What is the right super heroes system for my campaign?

Isn't V&V character generation random? I've never played it, so maybe this is a misconception, Random PCs wouldn't be a good fit for the game described in the OP.

What is the right super heroes system for my campaign?

I haven't seen the super hero rules for SW, but its hard to imagine handling cosmic-level super heroes (e.g. any of the various lantern corps, Superman) in that system. Low-powered super heroes work well enough in SW (I will be playing one on Sunday), but you'd need a lot of special rules to...

What is the right super heroes system for my campaign?

I'm a big fan of Champions; its very versatile and powerful. However, if you're looking for a simple system it may not be for you. Attacks and combat are simple, but character creation is complex. John Stater has a new superhero system (called "Mystery Men" IIRC). I haven't used it, but based...

GMs & DMs: What do you do with (severely) unbalanced adventuring parties?

Nytmare, maybe this is more feasible in 3e than in earlier editions? IMO, a group of straight arcane casters with no henchmen, hirelings, or the like to protect the magicians or heal their wounds will never get past the first couple of levels in AD&D. Hell, they'll probably never reach 2nd level.

Gygax: Beasts of Legend books, anything unique to the books?

There are new monsters in both books. Just going by memory, there are the demoniacal hybrids, a couple of varieties of nasty elf (only one of which was kind of drow-like), some fairies, some sort of gliding baboon things, the noose drakes, and many more. I really can't speak to the question of...

15 questions about your gaming style

Fantasy is my favorite, then superhero, then sci-fi or post-apocalyptic. If there's no "weird" element at all I'm not interested. All except businness-simulation (if I understand what is meant by that; world simulation = good, running an office supply company = boring) and wackiness (we...

GMs & DMs: What do you do with (severely) unbalanced adventuring parties?

As DM, correcting an imbalance in the party isn't my job. The players pick their characters, and the players pick the challenges that they want to pursue. If all PCs are thief types, they may do well if they decide to concentrate on heists in the city. If they head into a dungeon - not so much...
