I agree with the idea that if d&D never existed, that there might not be any RPGs at all. Ignoring that and assuming that the rest of the RPGs somehow still exist I'd probably be playing Call of Cthulhu, Champions, and Savage Worlds. Or possibly some fantasy heartbreaker that caught my fancy.

I agree about challenging the player as well as the character - but if I caught a player doing one of the 1st two things you mentioned above, I'd boot him from the game. Why would I let thieves and cheaters into my home? I wouldn't complain if the players can read my facial expression, though...

Many good stories mentioned already, but I'd add the "Elak of Atlantis" stories of Henry Kutner (at least one dungeon crawl in there), plus there was a novel in the "Dray Prescott" series by Alan Burt Akers that included a dungeon crawl.

I play 1E AD&D and I'm happy with it. Its not beyond possibility that I could change to 5E when it comes out, but its highly unlikely. My hope for 5E is that it is close enough to what I play that it has game entities (spells, monsters, adventures, etc) that I can port to my campaign.

I played it yesterday. :) I run a superhero game (not set in the Champions world, but in my own homebrew one). Its a great system for that, but I have found it less satisfying for fantasy games.

Wheras, in my OA game all PCs and NPCs are "Asians" (for lack of a better term). The group is currently sailing across the great western ocean and will likely be meeting "Polynesians" and "Native Americans" in a few months.

I think it depends on the setting of the game. If they released an "Oriental Adventures"-type book, should 10% of the humans depicted be black? IMO, no. In such a book the humans depicted should be neither black nor white.

If by "level" you mean hit dice, in 1E one divides HP by 4.5 to get hit dice. That makes both about 45 HD. If by "level" you mean monster level, both are level X (the top).

As a player, I prefer for my character to be able to die. The possibility of death (whether due to an error on my part or just bad luck) adds spice to the game. That said, if the GM screws up and makes an encounter that's tougher than he intended, I wouldn't resent a lucky break coming my way...
