WotC Seeks Unity with a New Edition

I think that a new edition that could unify the fractured fan base would be a very good thing - but I'm not sure its possible. Still, this has piqued my interest.

    Your Current Game?

    I'm currently running AD&D 1E and Champions 5E. I'm playing Savage Worlds.

    Battlefields versus the 5' dungeon.

I use the "battlefield" method. I go to a grid when combat starts. The initial location of PCs is determined by circumstances. In most cases the group's specifed party order determines where everyone starts, but if the group was searching a room, I would place them according to what area they...

The Ethics of )(*#$ing with the PCs' plans

I don't know about unethical, but its poor form and unfair IMO. NPCs act according to what they know, not what I know. The opposition cannot change its plans based on foreknowledge of the PCs' plans unless they legitimately have that foreknowledge (e.g. a spy overheard the party, or the baddies...

Character names, from the other players.

One player in my game has an elf with a Tolkien-derived name: Meneltarma (meaning "Pillar of Heaven" IIRC). The other PCs call him Mental Trauma. Another player named his PCs "Redleaf" and "Bluestar". Both of them ended up being called "Color object".

Hooking the Players onto AD&D1 Published Adventure Plot Hooks

Yes, we played it out - but not usually in the fashion that the module suggested. I blended the module with the campaign, so patrons changed, or the group got some other form of hook (e.g. an old treasure map, a mysterious clue in an old book, rumors, etc).

    Which game you played last?

    First edition AD&D.

Oops, I failed a Breathe check

Personally. I find epic failures to be fun - but 1 time in 20 is too often for my tastes. IMC, I require for a 1 on an attack roll to be "confirmed" to be a fumble, and not every fumble is an epic failure. And some things simply don't require a roll. Also, I only require a roll if the conditions...

How many tabletop roleplaying games did you play in 2011?

I clicked the 2-5 option in the poll. then realized that I actually played 6. AD&D 1E, AD&D 2E (variant/hybrid), Savage Worlds, Champions, Mutants & Masterminds, and Call of Cthulhu. Savage Worlds and Champions were strictly face-to-face, the 2E game (a mix of 2E and C&C) was all PBEM (play by...

Book of Vile Darkness: A Morality Play?

As other have said, the situation described is only a moral dilemma if the creatures in question are not inherently and irredeemably evil. If they are, the correct answer is to kill them all, since they will inevitably do only evil. If orcs and the like are not inherently and irredeemably evil...

    Monster Study: The Aarakocra

I really haven't seen a problem with this. I don't even use a hit penalty. The flying PC in my game is an illusionist. He rarely makes attack rolls, except with spells like chromatic orb. Since winged flight requires effort, he can no more cast on the wing than he can cast while walking or...

    Monster Study: The Aarakocra

I have a winged PC in my game (he's not an aaracokra). As some have mentioned already, winged flight isn't all that useful in a dungeon. Even outdoors, missile weapons (possessed by many humanoid types and all giants) guarantee that fliers are not invulnerable all of the time. If they are able...

Do you track the date? The phases of the moon? The weather? Holidays?

Yes to all. I use a calendar for most of it (an almanac or historical records wouldn't help as I run a fantasy game). For weather, I use the random table in the Wilderness Survival Guide.

Do you want/are you ready for a D&D 5th edition?

I play 1E, so I was left behind 3 edition changes ago. However, 2E and 3E at least had things that I could steal; 4E doesn't even hold that much interest for me. I expect a 5th edition to be even less useful.

    RPGs and "Bodily Functions"

Intestinal distress has been used to excuse the lack of participation from the characters of absent players. The players have been attacked while heading into the bushes to do their business, but never in flagrante delicto. Nor have they ever attacked an NPC with his pants down.

What's the wildest D&D story you've ever heard?

Also, it was a lich in the original example, right? So it didn't need to eat, breathe, sleep, or...dump.:)

    Your favourite botches

I once knew a gamer who seemed to be very, very unlucky. One of his PCs was hit with a lightning bolt from a monster called a gauth for around 6 points of damage. He failed his save, and (this being 1E AD&D) had to save for all of his items. At the end of that process he was left with an iron...

Should strong players have an advantage?

Roleplaying is a mental activity, not a physical one, so it would be ridiculous to grant bonuses in game for the player's strength - unless the DM is afraid that he'll be beaten up ;) In game, a smart player will choose better tactics and a wise one will do foolish things less often. There is...

Nitpick: 20 degrees C doesn't seem very tropical, nor is 30 degrees all that hot.
