    Optimization and optimizers...

I think optimization (of fill in the blank for the name) sometimes gets a bad name. I've been in this hobby for a long time, and I've played characters, simple to complex, all the way from start to end of game. I've played that simple fighter, I've played the build-your-own-class abomination. So...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I wanted to comment on this because I've played a beta campaign and run the quickstart. I've found the biggest issue with speed on Daggerheart to be familiarity with the rules and how to do things. Comparing speed of 5E games (where I assume that a lot of people have been playing for years and...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I think that's a very good point, and it was what I was attempting to say, yet doing it poorly. A fun game for me and my friends isn't the same thing at all as what Matt's doing. It should be fun for the players (because enthusiasm makes for a good show), but it's more about the audience. I...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I think you hit it spot on here. There are tons of factors in how long combat takes (or any other part of the game, for that matter), and we've had the game released in final form for about a month. I'd question anyone who says "this is how the game plays..." at this point, since we'll only...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Matt has spoken up a couple of times about rules issues that he's trying to get across to the viewers, so I have no doubt that there's some rules teaching going on. And (and this is just my opinion, of course) that's a very good thing. I think there should be more of it, right up to the point...

For those who don't play D&D (or its clones), what keeps you engaged with EN World?

I've been around here for conversations about other sites, and even the ones that started off positive or helpful turned into people talking trash about issues that typically had nothing to do with the initial question. So yeah, message received, and I always try to talk about the issue at hand...

For those who don't play D&D (or its clones), what keeps you engaged with EN World?

I think it may be a bit too early. But I'll participate when we get closer. I'm glad to get a beverage with any of you. The bartenders crazily remember me because I always tip them.

For those who don't play D&D (or its clones), what keeps you engaged with EN World?

I'm on a lot of different boards but I tend to read and not post to them. I'm a Redditer and actually mod a community over there where we discuss game design. Edited to add: there are a lot of boards still out there, but Enworld moderation doesn't really like to discuss different places here...

For those who don't play D&D (or its clones), what keeps you engaged with EN World?

Honestly, that's a really good question. I've found myself heading over to the tabletop RPG forum much more than the D&D one for a while now as I've drifted off from 5E. I'm just about to go back to a game we're starting up again with existing characters so I'll be playing it, but we're using...

Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft: Heir of Strahd Review

I am going to have to disagree with this. From the kids in Death House to the creature in the basement, to the Dream Pasteries to the experiments done by the Abbot to what Strahd did to Vallaki in my game ... it was plenty horrific. That's not to mention the dinner with Strahd and the eventual...

    Aging and Gaming

Thinking about this thread made me think about my life when I got started on Enworld. I live in the same city as Eric and heard about it right away, so I've been here forever. The thing was, I was an entirely different person back in those days. Edgy Internet warrior? Check! So there aren't...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

I love me some 4E: it's my favorite edition. At the same time, DH doesn't interest me in the same way at all. I like DH and I'm looking forward to running/playing it, but not for the tactical combat minigame. I'd say that the people who hate 4E haven't shown themselves to hate on DH either.

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

This is the big question. Will they move to DH on Critical Role? I think the decision has to come from what people are saying about the new system, and especially what their existing fanbase has to say about it. My Magic Eight Ball is pointing to "signs point to yes" right now. Critical Role is...

There's A Diablo TTRPG (and boardgame) Coming!

It's interesting that this hasn't happened yet, and I'm not surprised. I think it would be really difficult to get the feel for Diablo (or Grim Dawn, a game I also love!) in a tabletop RPG. I would be genuinely surprised to see if you could get the feeling and pace of those games for a TTRPG.

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

I think that while Daggerheart can do a lot, it can't do everything. And options/rules/settings ... you name it, those are coming. The game is just getting started, and it seems clear they want to do a lot with it.

I've been watching the Umbra series and I think Matt's doing a solid job with it. If you have the time, I'd say it's worth watching.

Ivan Van Norman Leaves Darrington Press

I would say it's closest to early seasons of Supernatural, before the meta-plot really kicked in. Or the X-Files when the episode wasn't about the ongoing conspiracy.

D&D 5E (2024) Is There A New Sheriff in Town?

To be sure. Daggerheart isn't trying to be an all-things-to-all-people game, and I expect there will be plenty who bounce off it, have your meh reaction, or just hate it. That's another reason why I think D&D isn't in any danger. I do hope that it expands to be another viable alternative to play.

D&D 5E (2024) Is There A New Sheriff in Town?

This is a situation where what I want to be true just won't be. I'd love for Daggerheart to explode onto the scene and take the rpg world by storm but D&D is a brand. Its the “xerox” or “scotch tape” or “google” of the gaming world. People just know the brand. Now I think it will grow...

The ones I really note are Blades in the Dark (Jonathan Harper) and 13th Age (Rob Hensoo and Jonathan Tweet). Fortunately they have a solid "inspirational sources" list, which looks like this: (Note: Mods, if there's any issue with posting that screencap, I'll remove it).
