    Critical Hit with Fireball!

Well, don't forget that a natural 1 on a save in 3.x can result in extra badness for the target in the form of damaged equipment. So, while it isn't double damage, it is kind of like a crit. Sorta. -Will

Comments on Noonan's thoughts on Monsters

Beats me. It's a great idea. The easiest combats I've ever run involved me using index cards with the monster stats printed right on them, because I use the same cards for dealing with initiative order. I've already got the stack of cards in my hands, so when it's Monster A's turn to go, his...

Alright WotC, fess up...who came up with "Emerald Frost"?

Meh. I strongly suspect that most game settings that have deities have obvious counterparts to most, if not all, of the deities in the PHB. Substitute your favorite magic god for Boccob, your nature god for Obad-Hai, your paladin god for Heironeous... The only complaint I have about the 3.x...

    D&D 3.x If 3.5 was so good...

Saying that 3e has "deep and fundamental" problems does not imply that it is unplayable, or that the problems are even all that significant, necessarily; it just means that the problems run throughout the system, to its very foundation. In other words, even if the problems are relatively minor...

Alright WotC, fess up...who came up with "Emerald Frost"?

I dunno, but Wikipedia says the strongest ones are all colorless, except for hydrochloric acid, which can be yellowish. I'm guessing the green thing is just for fun. :) And to decipher the reaction equation I gave: Hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide, when combined, react to form water...

Alright WotC, fess up...who came up with "Emerald Frost"?

Actually, now I totally want to see a water-focused wizard who casts acid spells using salt as a material component. Just kind of reverse the neutralization reaction... :) HCl + NaOH -> H2O + NaCl -Will

    Rezzing

I never said it did. But I think it's a bit silly to claim that you know which parts of reality should apply to the subject of religion in fantasy games in general, particularly in the context of fantasy games in which gods are demonstrably real and grant their followers cool magic powers. -Will

    New Design: Wizards...

Huh? It sounds like it's all about where the point of origin of the spell's effect is. A cone of fire's point of origin is the tip of your staff. A lightning bolt's point of origin is the tip of your staff. A flamestrike's point of origin is...somewhere up in the heavens, over there. See...

Anyone else hope the rules for taking 10 & 20 see some revision?

Cool. Thanks. That is a fine argument, and I rather agree with the sentiment. But riddle me this, Batman: is there any rules support for it? :) The rules seem silent on when you make your Hide check. The way I've always seen it played, the hider makes his check when he declares that he's...

    D&D 4E 4E Rules first Role-Play second?

I wasn't too impressed by the DMG II, but I enjoyed the heck out of the HBG. I found it to be one of the more surprisingly useful books in the game. I hope they aren't too discouraged from doing something similar in 4e... Also, people tend to think they know how to "role-play," but really...

    Why is it so important?

Not just something "wizardly," but something effective. If it's just turning "I miss with my crossbow...again" into "I miss with my magic foozle ray...again," I'll be disappointed. -Will

Anyone else hope the rules for taking 10 & 20 see some revision?

The main problems I have with Take 10: Spot/Listen: Can you take 10 on a reflexive check? I like Hong's rule, but I also think players like rolling dice to see if they've spotted something. Especially if it's got a good Hide check. Should I just call for "Spot checks," and let players...
