    What the heck is "Unfun"?

Non sequitur. Non sequitur. Look, guys, you could remove save-or-die spells from 3.x without removing all hint of challenge, risk, and death. This isn't difficult. Is it? I like Andy Collins's variant for save-or-die effects. Just convert it into a crapload of damage. Still pretty deadly...

    What the heck is "Unfun"?

    (1) So he had extra arrows stowed elsewhere. Or he recovered a bunch after fights. Or he whittled the lousy things himself before going to sleep. (2) Ask the choreographer. :) Can't please everyone, I guess. It's a game. You roll dice in games. Whassamatta? Also, I didn't say you...

    What the heck is "Unfun"?

I can't imagine the sort of person that would be bugged by that. So, if he'd been depicted buying arrows in town from time to time, those people wouldn't freak out? What's the problem with just assuming it was too boring to show you? Also, it does not damage verisimilitude. Once the above...

    What the heck is "Unfun"?

Or, they're just hand-waving the issue. Give it a good mechanic, so that it's not just the DM randomly screwing with the party, and I'm down with it. -Will

    What the heck is "Unfun"?

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean that save-or-dies are challenging because you're supposed to figure out how to avoid them? So, I'm playing a hero. There's a BBEG what needs killin'. I go over to his house, just like the DM expects and hopes I do, and the BBEG slaps me with a...

    What the heck is "Unfun"?

Oy. Re: tracking arrows: It's not that it's hard, it's that it's expensive, in that it is a small amount of effort for virtually no reward. And it doesn't hurt verisimilitude, either. Verisimilitude is the appearance of realism. If Legolas never ran out of arrows, would you really declare...

D&D 4E Material components and spell books? Get rid of them for 4e!

IME, most people ignore inexpensive spell components; as long as you have your component pouch with you, you're good to go. So, what about the expensive ones? I believe they're meant to be a balancing mechanism in 3.x -- that is, raise dead has a 5,000 gp component because it's more powerful...

Classes need to be ready to go from the beginning

FWIW, ISTR that Mearls left Malhavoc Press for WotC before the game was quite ready to be released. It's definitely a little rough around the edges. They did recently release a revised version of it, though I haven't looked at it. The IH forum at Malhavoc Press is a pretty good resource for...

Side Effect: No more running away?

I am going to take this opportunity to pimp my rough, unpolished, 100% unplaytested chase rules. I hope to have the opportunity to try them out soon! -Will

    D&D 4E Encumbrance in 4e

I think the weights used in D&D also try to take into account the bulkiness of various items. Like, if something weighs N pounds, but is really long and unwieldy, its D&D weight would be some number greater than N. I could be mistaken. -Will

    Why is it so important?

It occurs to me that someone who has played with Unearthed Arcana's spell recharge variant magic system might be able to provide us with valuable descriptions of their experiences. Anyone? :) -Will

    D&D 4E Encumbrance in 4e

Oh, man, I love how Donjon handles encumbrance. I also love its Provisions system*. Poring over the list of mundane equipment that you pretty much have to buy in D&D is fun exactly once, IME. After that, I kind of wish we could just assume everyone has a lousy 50' rope, a few torches, etc. *...

    Why is it so important?

Y'know, it occurs to me that the reason why many combats feel exciting is not that per-day resources are spent, but that limited resources are spent. Thing is, per-encounter resources are still limited! There will be those "Oh, !@#$, I'm out of per-encounter abilities, and this bastard still...

    D&D 4E Encumbrance in 4e

Dear, sweet Lord, how I hate the current encumbrance rules. Mind you, they're no worse than in previous editions, but thus spake Zaruthustran: QF, as they say, T. -Will

DI and other Supplements are not "core" Core

It sounds like their definition of "core" is closer to what I (and many others) would call "official." I'm a little bothered by this. -Will

D&D 4E Should Ability Scores in 4E Be Randomly Determined?

I'm a bit late to the game, but I'm really surprised it took 71 posts before anyone mentioned this. This is huge, IMO. All of us here have a decent amount of D&D experience under our belts, but for a complete newbie, rolling is vastly superior to point-buy, not only for the reasons listed...
