ECL vs. CR = Experience? A thought on balance

I voted "I do not care", because I don't use CRs for anything more than a possible starting point when choosing a monster as an opponent for my party. I do not use CRs to calculate exp, nor do I use exp at all (If I did use exp, all would be story award exp, meaning completing an adventure...

    Developer's Roundtable: Mystic Theurge

I still maintain that there is, imho, no need to fix caster multiclassing. Clerics have, with the right domains, already access to many of the arcane spells, and can make up the rest with item use through the magic domain. Voila, a balanced (as far as clerics are balanced) arcane/divine magic user.

Bards: do they even use feats?

I have taken (among others) lingering song and extend spell for my bard, and have used both too good effect. Weapon Finesse (Rapier) would also be a useful feat imho.

Sorceror in current edition worse than wizard?

Because a spell with a casting time of one full round uses a full round action, but does not go off until right before the next round's action of the caster, while a metamagicked spell only uses a full round action. A full round action does not take, as illustrated by the fighter's full attack...

Where does making an effective character end and munchkinism begin?

For me, munchkin begins where a person wants to have the most powerful character in the party (however he or she defines most powerful) and does not care if this goal hampers the other players' and the DM's fun and enjoyment of the game. Yes, that means that for me, "munchkinism" is relative...

Can someone with a search function please drag out the numerous threads on this subject?

Sorceror in current edition worse than wizard?

<Groan> Not another Full Round Action does not equal full round casting time discussion! Suffice to say that the consensus was that a Sorcerer that uses a metamagic feat has to take a full round action, like a fighter taking the full attack option, and so is limited to a 5-foot step as...

Arms & Equipment guide : Price for mercenaries

If I want a "weaker" fighter than a standard level 1 fighter I choose non-combat feats like skill focus or alertness, or feats that affect saves etc. for him or her. Or I take an expert, or aristocrat, or even a commoner with a martial weapon proficiency.

    Frustrating Gamers- slight rant

So you have a problem with people who have a preference for low-magic low-combat campaigns and do not want to sacrifice lots of time and energy to playtest something that they can see at once has no place in their campaign? You know, THEIR campaign, not YOUR game. As in "does not affect YOU in...

Arms & Equipment guide : Price for mercenaries

I solved that situation by virtually eliminating warriors in my game. Almost every trained melee fighter IMC is a fighter (or ranger, or barbarian), not a warrior. Edit: IMHO, there is no need for warriors, and no logical reason. If you are not as well trained in fighting as a fighter, you are...

    Theurge-Smacking Goodness

Hey, IMC that spell is banned - but in my campaign, treasure is much lower than in "standard" D&D, magic items are rare, advancement slow, and players prefer social situations over combats even when the party is leading an army on a campaign to free a city occupied by a horde of humanoid...

    Theurge-Smacking Goodness

I would judge the MT overpowered in my campaign because, as I said, he has a great number of buff and utility spells for non-combat situations at his disposal. Eagle's Splendor, especially empowered or double empowered, makes handling that noble much easier. Detect Poison (several of them)...

    Theurge-Smacking Goodness

IMHO, smackdown capacity is not a valid criteria when judging if a class is overpowered. Too much of a class' power depends on the enviroment, i.e. how many combats are there per day? How many social or mystery adventures are there? How much time can be spent preparing or training? In my...

How to balance the divine casters?

I have one rule concenring such problems - I eyeball the final result, and deem it balanced or overpowered compared to the party the PC is played in, and the campaign in question. I don't care much about the origin of spells, only the result. If that means banning half the PHB spells in one...

Sorceror in current edition worse than wizard?

As long as the spells work, what is the problem? And, IME, a wizards ends up preparing the same spells over and over again as well - can't really go without a dispel magic or better two, maybe a silent or still in case you are held or silenced, a fireball or similar area-effect spell just in...

    Dilema, what stat to increase?

I'd up charisma, probably, depends on what amount of diplomacy and solcial situations you get in your game. For the player of the paladin in my campaign, where the players prefer social interaction to combat, it is a non-issue. But even in a more combat-centric campaign, charisma enhances a...

Do you find the Mystic Theurge overpowered?

Am I the only one who was glad that the 2E multiclass cleric/wizard was not viable anymore? The only one who did not think that there should be a way to have a caster multiclass without giving up something significant? IMHO the cleric spell list, especially with domains, is so close to the...

Sorceror in current edition worse than wizard?

I am really astonished how people dismiss the ability to spontaneously cast any spell you know. Do your wizard never enter situations where they prepared the wrong spells, or not enough of the right spells? Add metamagic to that, with the possibility to cast that silent dispel magic until you...

    KoK Products

I can vouch for the Villain Design Handbook, the advice in this book can be applied to any setting (I'd drop the anti-feats though). The Player's Guide is quite good as well, although I personally think some of the feats are overpowered. The additional core classes do look good, however, and...
